Educational Activities Board (EAB) Liaison Report to Standards Activities Board (SAB) EAB Liaison David SchultzMarch 26, 2010
Summary of current EAB activities • The IEEE-CS Educational Activities Board (CAB) concentrates most heavily on working with current undergraduate students in computer science and related fields • It also has an arm that reaches out to recent graduates: Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) • The EAB chair, Alan Clements, would like to have stronger outreach programs to postgraduates and students in grades K-12
IEEE-CS e-Learning Activities • IEEE-CS member benefits include access to three commercial e-Learning venues: • Element K – offers a variety of e-learning courses; so far, 20,000 members have used this • Safari Books – provides access to commercial books that you can buy through Amazon; 4600 members have accessed these books • Books 24/7 – provides paid access to a more professional set of books than Safari Books; 68 members purchased subscriptions during 2008-09
EAB Professional Development Activities • EAB is developing classes to help members prepare for the CSDA and CSDP certification exams • They’re developing four classes for the CSDA and eight for the CSDP, plus a sample test for each • I’ve verified that the CSDA and CSDP textbooks and tests include material on standards
IEEE-CS Curriculum Committee • The Curriculum Committee has recently completed a model undergraduate curriculum in Computer Science and Engineering • We are also beginning to develop curricula for grades K-12 and postgraduate • EAB has not been closely involved in the grades K-12 computing education activity
EAB Support of Student Competitions • EAB has a history of supporting student competitions • We used to have a grant for the high-profile CSIDC competition, but this money has evaporated • Alan Clements has formed a subcommittee to explore other types of competitions that we can conduct on a greatly reduced budget
