The Committee of Public Safety • Maximillien Robespierre was on of the twelve rulers • Dictated the French government • Suspended right to trial • Powerful and widely feared • Killed many suspected counter-revolutionaries via the guillotine (Right) • Revolutionary tribunal (Left)- court formed by the Committee of Public Safety to try suspected counter-revolutionaries • Counter-revolutionary- a person who is against the revolution

  3. The Role of the Committee of Public Safety • Aimed at Governing and stabilizing France’s Government • Eliminated threats to the government by the death sentence • Protect from foreign enemies

  4. Causes of the Reign of Terror • France wasn’t in peace (execution of king, war with foreign enemies) • Strong resistance from counter-revolutionaries

  5. Need for the Terror • Needed to strengthen war efforts • Needed to strengthen the revolution • Eliminated internal threats like counter-revolutionaries This is to symbolize war efforts

  6. Vendee Civil War • Location • South of Loire river • Geographically isolated • Rural • Culturally and religiously distinct • Had high density of nobles/clergy Beautiful local • The Vendee civil war • Futhured radical partisan beliefs • They were counter-revolutionaries People in a war
