The tooth decay process • Plaque combines with sugar to form an acid. • Acid eats through enamel and dentin and reaches the pulp. • This creates a hole, or a cavity. • When the acid reaches the pulp, a toothache occurs because air hits the nerves.

Acne • Acne is a normal part of puberty. • Acne occurs when the hair follicles get clogged with oil. • If a pore gets clogged with oil and dead skin cells, a zit forms. • A whitehead happens when a pore gets clogged but stays closed. • Pressure causes the skin to get red and raised with a white tip that holds in oil. • A pimple is a red bump caused by bacteria and dead skin cells getting under the skin’s surface.
Acne • Tips for dealing with acne are: • Wash your face twice a day with mild soap and water to keep it clean. • Use oil-free sunscreen. • Use over-the-counter products. • Do not pick or pop zits. Picking or popping zits can cause scars and can cause oil to spread. • If acne gets really bad, special skin doctors called dermatologists can help.

Alcohol’s effects on the body • Heart: Heart rate slows down. Increased risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. • Stomach: Upset stomach, ulcers, stomach cancer. • Kidneys: produce more urine, possible kidney failure. • Skin: red appearance, acne worsens, skin looks puffy. • Eyes: blurry eyesight, small pupils • Bones: can’t soak up calcium – easier to break • Liver: cirrhosis
