  1. Modeling, Simulation & Training Industry Our Challenge:To Attract, Grow, Maintain & Enhance a Critical Element of the Florida Economy THOMAS L. BAPTISTE, Lt Gen, USAF (Ret) President/Executive Director National Center for Simulation (NCS) 18 Jun 2010

  2. Overview • Florida’s Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T) Cluster • Meeting National requirements • Big impact on Florida’s economy • Team Orlando--Academia, Industry, Government and the Research Park • Medical MS&T --“a bright future” • The support role of the National Center for Simulation (NCS)

  3. SIMULATION • Simulations save lives, money & time • M&S technologies are used in training, planning, analysis, engineering, test & evaluation • Research can be performed using simulation instead of costly & often times damaging live or “real world” events “Almost every soldier or Marine deployed to the Middle East is trained on some kind of system developed in Central Florida.” Orlando Sentinel, Jan. 11, 2009

  4. FLORIDA IS THE MS&T LEADER • M&S is a national “Critical Technology” with its epicenter in Central FL • Florida has MS&T academic programs in high schools, an Associate’s Degree at Daytona State College (funded by the Florida High Tech Corridor Council) & a Doctoral Program at UCF • UCF has established a network of incubators to nurture start-up MS&T companies • Over 58,000 jobs in Florida support the MS&T industry

  5. MAJOR US CENTERS OF MS&T

  6. M&S LEADERSHIP CAUCUS MEMBERS Florida: • Jeff Miller • Suzanne Kosmas California: • Ken Calvert • Susan Davis MD: C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger NY: Maurice Hinchey TN: Zach Wamp SC: Joe Wilson IL: Bill Foster NC: Virginia Foxx GA: Phil Gingrey AL: Robert Aderholt CO: Doug Lamborn UT: Jim Matheson • Virginia: • Randy Forbes, Co-Chair • Bobby Scott • Rob Wittman • Glenn Nye • Texas: • Solomon Ortiz, Co-Chair • John Carter • Mike Conaway Pennsylvania: • Todd Russell Platts • Joe Sestak • Jim Gerlach

  7. DoD’sMS&T center of Excellence 1/2 • “Team Orlando” includes the services, joint commands, academia and industry • More than 2,500 DoD military and civilian personnel • About $4.5 billion/year in acquisitions (2008) FHTCC NCS ADL Co-Lab JDIF, JFCOM RDECOM -STTC PEO-STRI AFAMS PM TRASYS NAWC-TSD US Coast Guard IST/ UCF

  8. DoD’sMS&T center of Excellence 2/2 • The Research Park • Adjacent to UCF—third largest University in the U.S. • Home for the National Center for Simulation and UCF’s Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) • Home for the MS&T acquisition agencies of all the Services except the Air Force • Surrounded by large cluster (>100) of MS&T companies • Proximity facilitates synergy between Academia, Industry and Government found no where else in the world • Partnership, collaboration and teamwork lower acquisition risk and are good for America • The State of Florida has stepped forward to fund force protection measures to satisfy DoD requirements

  9. THE RESEARCH PARK SYNERGIES FROM PROXIMITY UNIVERSITY of CENTRAL FLORIDA National Center for Simulation Simulation & Trng Technology Center (STTC) L3 COM GENERAL DYNAMICS Institute for Simulation & Training Booz-Allen & Hamilton RAYTHEON Partnership III Building Site LOCKHEED MARTIN SAIC JFCOM & JTIEC ARMY AT&T NAVY MARINE CORPS ARMY Congresswoman Kosmas ARMY NAVY NORTHRUP GRUMMAN ARMY ARMY COAST GUARD Joint ADL Co-Lab AIR FORCE ARMY ARMY

  10. FLORIDA CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS

  11. FLORIDA’s MILITARY INSTALLATIONS • Approximate numbers of personnel • Active Duty Military 50,700 • Reserve and National Guard 53,900 • Total Personnel 104,600

  12. MS&T Economic Impact • Approximately 850 Florida Firms Involved in MS&T* • Employing more than 22,500 Floridians* • Average salary $66,000* • $4.5 B Impact on Florida Gross State Product* • $7.8 B Annual Sales Activity* • “Team Orlando” includes more than 2,500 military and civilian personnel* • 58,000 Jobs Support MS&T* *Based on a sampling/REMI Modeling of 122 MS&T Companies in 2008 study funded by Florida High Tech Corridor Council

  13. Medical MS&T • A bright future • Potential for spin-off of 60 years of world class MS&T work for DoD into medical MS&T • Orlando’s Medical City • Another arrow in the quiver of Team Orlando • Cluster of world class medical facilities will attract the “best of the best” • UCF’s Medical School—built from the ground up to include the latest in MS&T technology • Influenced VA decision to establish a medical MS&T COE at new Lake Nona Medical Center • Orlando already #1 destination in the world for medical conferences

  14. National Center for Simulation (NCS) • 501c(3) not-for-profit member corporation in Orlando, FL • More than 150 U.S. & international members, with a high concentration in Central FL • The link between government, industry & academia to further MS&T technology • Promotes the transfer of defense MS&T technology to other applications: medical, homeland security, education, transportation, Digital Media & entertainment • Supports MS&T awareness & public policy development • Supports Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) education & workforce development programs www.simulationinformation.com

  15. Summary • MS&T technologies support the war fighter & save lives • MS&T represents a significant economic impact throughout Florida • There is every reason why the epicenter of medical MS&T should also be in Central Florida

  16. Our Challenge To Attract, Grow, Maintain & Enhance The Modeling, Simulation & Training Industry in Florida
