How many Americans are proficient in a second language? • Only 9% of Americans can speak their native language plus another language fluently, as opposed to 53% of Europeans. • Only 44% of high school students are studying any foreign language and less than 1% percent study a critical-need language. • There is a shortage of language professionals in the U.S. diplomatic corps, military, and intelligence agencies. The national deficiency in the languages and cultures of critical areas around the world is compromising American security and business interests at home and abroad.

Brigham Young University BYU Summer Arabic Camp • Twelve high school students will complete the equivalent of BYU's Arabic 101 course, reaching at least Intermediate Low proficiency in speaking and reading Arabic.
Chicago Public Schools Arabic Language Institute • 20 students currently enrolled in High School Arabic Level 1 will continue studies via a 4-week intensive summer program in a university setting in preparation for Arabic Level 2. • The Teacher Professional Development program provides a four-week pedagogy-based professional development for teachers of Arabic language to introduce traditional and contemporary considerations for effective curriculum planning, design and development as applied to teaching Arabic in the U.S.
Concordia Language Villages • Two- and four-week scholarships are available for 40 high school students to participate in the Arabic Language Village. Both Programs are cultural- and language-immersion settings for beginning to advanced speakers.
George Washington UniversityNational Capital Language Resource Center • Teaching Arabic to College and Upper High School Students • Arabic K-12 Hands-On Workshop • Writing and Implementing Curricula for Teachers of Arabic
Human Assistance & Development International • Major goals are to enhance and promote the quality of teaching of the Arabic language in the U.S. with superior training and professional development, thereby increasing the number of qualified Arabic language educators.
Michigan State University Dearborn Public Schools • Workshop for teachers interested in a collaborative environment to learn about the latest developments in the field of Arabic language teaching.
Middlebury College • Ten Arabic teachers will be enrolled in a two-week intensive immersion workshop during the Middlebury Language Schools' summer 2007 session.
Northern Kentucky University NKU Research Foundation • This program consists of a seven-week intensive summer institute for 12 graduate credits leading to alternative certification for teachers of Arabic. Also, there is also a free fifteen hour workshop on teaching Arabic language June 4-June 10.
Northern Virginia Community College • “Powering Up Your Arabic Language Courses with Technology” • A summer institute of four full-day sessions studying technology and language pedagogy for up to ten teachers of Arabic.
Occidental College • Fifteen participants will design an interpretive task that reflects the Arab culture and their students' proficiency levels. They will also select authentic texts and learn to scaffold activities to deploy them into a teaching unit.
Seattle Public Schools • A teacher certification program enabling teachers of Arabic to quality for conditional teacher certificates in Washington State and to continue on the path to full Arabic teacher certification.
Arlington (VA) Public Schools • Summer Exploratory and Enrichment for Arabic • Two courses will be offered: one exploratory, and one maintenance and enrichment for those who have completed Arabic I, helping to expand, enhance, and support the existing courses offered during the school year.
Beloit College • This residential program offers talented high school students (age 17 and above) the opportunity to complete a year's worth of college-level language training in nine weeks (a semester's worth in the 4.5-week option).
Charlestown (MA) High School The Arabic Summer Academy • Forty students were welcomed to a summer enrichment program for five weeks of intensive language learning and cultural experience.
Howard County (MD) Community College • Intensive Critical Language Learning Experience for County High School Students • Thirty high school students will be taught Modern Standard Arabic through a variety of techniques to develop skills in listening, speaking, writing, and reading and will receive 8 college credits for the 8-week program.
OneWorld Now! Seattle, WA • Summer language camp for Arabic • An intensive 2-week summer language camp in Modern Standard Arabic will be organized for 50 Seattle Public School students.

ACTFL/CLASS Discovering Chinese • American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages • Chinese Language Association for Elementary and Secondary Schools • Oral and written proficiency / cultural knowledge will progress significantly after an intensive four-week instructional program as measured by pre-and post-interviews and written tests.
Arlington (VA) Public Schools • Two courses will be offered: one exploratory and one maintenance and enrichment for those who have completed Chinese I, helping to expand, enhance, and support the existing courses offered during the school year.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott (AZ) Campus • ERAU Upgrading Language Programs for High School Students • Three college credits will be offered to high school juniors and seniors in beginning Mandarin Chinese.
University of Hawaii • Chinese Language Immersion Sports Camp • Sixty high school students with no previous experience in Chinese will learn Mandarin Chinese through total immersion in a sports camp where Chinese martial arts and ping-pong will be taught in Mandarin Chinese by People's Republic of China national-level champions in the sports.
Howard County (MD) Community College • Intensive Critical Language Learning Experience for County High School Students • Thirty high school students will be taught Mandarin Chinese (simplified) through a variety of techniques to develop skills in listening, speaking, writing, and reading and will receive 8 college credits for the 8-week program.
Hunter College (NYC) • Intensive Chinese for High School Students • Students will complete an equivalent of one year of beginning Chinese in a Chinese-only environment.
University of Mississippi • Mississippi High School Short Pipeline Project • The project will provide thirty rising high school juniors and seniors in North Mississippi and contiguous areas with four weeks of intensive instruction in Chinese on the campus of the University of Mississippi during the summer of 2007.
University of Pennsylvania • Penn Young Scholar Chinese Academy • Two levels of Beginning Chinese (I and II) is offered to high school students with encouragement that they participate in further study of Chinese language and culture.
Rutgers University (NJ) Rutgers Language Institute • Program will enhance high school students' language proficiency, gaining insight into cultural perspectives of the society through experiences with the products and practices of the Chinese people.
Southern California Council of Chinese Schools • Program will provide 320 students with a global vision and sensitivity to foreign cultures as well as enhancing Chinese language competency and generating a lifelong interest in learning Chinese.
Stanford University California Foreign Language Project • This project offers an accelerated program for 30 students in Mandarin Chinese language and culture with opportunities to expand their learning beyond formal instruction.
Indiana University Chinese Pedagogy Institute • This intensive two-week residential institute will offer instruction to 15 prospective and current high school Chinese teachers.
Middlebury College (VT) • Ten Chinese teachers will be enrolled in a two-week intensive immersion workshop during the Middlebury Language Schools' summer 2007 session.
