  1. What Does Thinking Differently Mean? gurukulschoolofdesign.com/blog/what-does-thinking-differently-mean Having the ability to stand out and think differently are two crucial factors when it comes to Design. Particularly in creative channels like fashion design, having a unique perspective is synonymous and extremely valuable in the pursuit of innovation. The phrase 'think outside the box' is uttered and heard across sectors but how does someone begin to adopt a new perspective? And what does it mean to think differently? In the fashion industry, designers like Yohji Yamamoto, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Betsey Johnson, Ritu Kumar and Raghavendra Rathore are all prime examples of distinct individuality and uniqueness among a sea of arts. All of these designers stand out thanks to their ability to invent new artistic vocabularies in their own ways. To think differently is to convey ideas that hone in on individual tastes but manifesting it through varied ways. 1/2

  2. Take Alexander McQueen for instance. His fashion legacy is built on themes of provocation, lavishness and beauty that are then explored through his shows and collections. Meanwhile, designers like Ritu Kumar built a fashion empire by redefining traditional craftsmanship through a contemporary and evocative lens. Vivienne Westwood's punk aesthetic and attitude earned her a cult following on a global scale, creating her very own new genre of clothing loved and beloved by all. Elsewhere in Japan, Yohji Yamamoto's avant-garde tailoring and elements of haute couture firmly cemented him as a creative genius. From these designers alone, it's safe to say that to think differently in the realm of fashion and design, is comparable to focusing on an area of expertise, taste or scope of work. Though the common understanding of what it means to be different refers to the unusual, the opposite or the odd, the truth is, it means making something uniquely yours. To think differently is to be bold in your choices, to be expressive in your views and certainly to be artistically true to yourself. It is a mindset that needs to be adopted and a process that comes with practice. After all, change does not happen overnight, and neither does being different. To successfully think differently is really to be more conscious of your choice to make each one reflect your value. Times are changing 16-Mar-2017 2/2
