Extraterrestrial Life It’s Out There!
There is Other Life • I know the stereotype for alien life: green with antennae and “Take us to your leader” and all that. Not very many people take the search for other life seriously. But I think there is life out there. It might not be intelligent life, though.
Tiny, Rugged Life • Scientists have learned that microbial life is far more tenacious than ever imagined, and able to survive deep underground, in glaciers, alongside hydrothermal vents, and even floating in the atmosphere. These nonliving building blocks need planets to land on where they can possibly interact in ways that can lead to biology and life, and now we know that such planets, or exo-planets, are common.
Tons of Possibilities • More than 500 planets have been positively identified in the past 15 years, 1200 new candidate planets were discovered by NASA’s Kepler mission this year, and scientists are now convinced there are billions of exoplanets in the Milky Way and beyond. One of them is bound to have life.
With all that Evidence… Some scientists say that finding life out there will be impossible. There is very little unfrozen and non-gaseous water out there. We need water, so other life-forms will also need it, right? It isn’t possible they adapted, right?
Ugh…. • We have searched the planets over and over with little results. Sure, there’s water on Mars, but we haven’t found any life. Maybe we should just assume that this project won’t work and shut it down.

Conclusion • Life is out there somewhere. Like I said before: it may not be intelligent life, but it will be life. And we just have to find it.
