  1. Understanding Educational Technology Issues and Trends Presented by: AyanaBedney

  2. What Is Technology? • Tools, machines, and/or systems used to perform skills and functions such as input/output to transmit information, achieve a goal, or solve problems. • Examples: Computer, mp3 players (i.e. iPod), tablets, phones, etc.

  3. The Importance of Technology Technology is very important in our daily lives because it makes work and our daily activities easier. Through technology, people can travel, communicate from over seas, and get all the information they require. A good example of technology is the computer that can be applied in teaching, research and almost all field you can think of.

  4. Technology Trends in the Classroom Technology is advancing very vastly and has many benefits for accommodating and improving student learning. Below is a list of technology items that are currently often used in the classroom: -SMART Board -Tablets -Video Sharing sites (YouTube)

  5. Educational Trends • SMART Board The Smart Board is an interactive whiteboard that uses touch detection for user input (with a stylus pen) in the same way as normal PC input devices. • Copy + Paste the URL link below in your web browser to watch a short clip of a teacher using a SMART Board in her elementary class. • www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCfmJCSAG70‎

  6. Educational Trends • Teach trigonometric functions ***Whiteboard app is a program that allows free-hand writing (with your hand or stylus) is used to teach Unit Circle. Students can learn functions such as sine, cosine, and tangent. • Learn times tables (multiplication) ***Squeeblesis a highly interactive game that teaches primary school students multiplication. The app remembers incorrectly answered questions so that students can reattempt them at the end of each level. • See the night sky during the day ***Google Sky allows students to find, label, and measure the distance between specific stars. • Simulate acid-base titrations ***Acid Base Titration Curve

  7. Educational Trends YouTube is a video-sharing website, on which users can upload, view and share videos. YouTube provides a visual aid resource to students who may have trouble reading, and comprehending. The software can share a lot of information in a shorter amount of time and serves as a great resource for online classes.

  8. Advantages & Disadvantagesof Technology Use in Educationof Technology Trends • Advantages * Motivating factor to participate * Improves students’ technical skills * More peer collaborative work * Provides wide range of resources * Software is engaging/Keeps audience’s attention span. • Disadvantages * Computer does a lot of work for students. * Takes more of the ‘thinking process’ out of solving a problem. * Technical Problems *Lack of IT skills (students and teachers)

  9. Technology Trends in the Classroom Understanding the Issues • A Pew Research Center survey found that nearly 90 percent of teachers believe that digital technologies were creating an easily distracted generation with short attention spans. • 76 percent of teachers believed students are being conditioned by the internet to find quick answers, leading to a loss of concentration. • Technology has become a catalyst for distraction and off task behavior with students, tweeting, or prowling through YouTube when they’re supposed to be listening to the teacher or doing classwork promotes a lack of focus. 10. Technology Trends in the Classroom Stats of Success • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has an iPad app for Algebra 1 that combines its standard textbook with interactive content. Each iPad app costs schools $59.99, a savings of $13 off the company's hardcover textbook. • In a pilot program in four California districts, students who used the Algebra 1 app outperformed students who used traditional textbooks. • iPads have helped engage students, cut down on paper, and allowed absent students to keep up with class work. 11. Conclusion In conclusion, research shows that implementing technology in the classroom has both positive and negative results. As with any modernized ideals and tools, it works best when used productively and proficiently. However, when misused or abused, it does the exact opposite and poses as a learning distraction, rather than a benefit. I hope that the information provided has given you new insight of alternative solutions to effective teaching and learning.
