Our Role as Priests 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. • Declare: show forth, demonstrate, publicize, announce • Praises: excellencies, virtues, characteristics & qualities • Not a position IN the church. It is the position OF the church!

  3. Priesthood Hebrews 7 1This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2and Abraham apportioned to him a tenth of everything. First, his name means “king of righteousness.” Then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3Without father or mother or genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God, he remains a priest for all time.

Priesthood 4Consider how great Melchizedek was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him the first tenth of the plunder. 5Now the law commands the sons of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their brothers—though they too are descended from Abraham. 6But Melchizedek, who did not trace his descent from Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7And indisputably, the lesser is blessed by the greater.

Priesthood 8In the case of the Levites, mortal men collect the tenth; but in the case of Melchizedek, it is affirmed that he lives on. 9And so to speak, Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham. 10For when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the loin of his ancestor.

Law of Identification Romans 5 12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned. 13For sin was in the world before the law was given; but sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come.

For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many! 16Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

Moravians Johann Leonhard Dober and David Nitschmann, two young Moravian Brethren from Herrnhut, Germany, were called in 1732 to minister to the African slaves on the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix in the Danish West Indies where an atheist plantation owner had 2-3000 slaves working the sugar cane fields. When they were told that they would not be allowed to go as missionaries, Dober and Nitschmann sold themselves to a slave owner and boarded a ship bound for the West Indies. As the ship pulled away from the docks, they called out to their loved ones on shore, "May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering!"

Berlin Wall In 1982, an East German pastor in Leipzig with the unlikely name of Christian Führer started a Monday night prayer meeting at St. Nicholas Church, where a handful of Christians prayed for peace in their freedom-starved country. Over the years that followed, St. Nicholas Church attracted protestors of all stripes, Christians and non-Christians alike. By 1989, the Monday night prayer meeting became a regular demonstration, and the numbers swelled to over 70,000 people. The church in Leipzig became Ground Zero for protestors in East Germany, and their movement helped to change the course of world history. And it all began with a small prayer group.

What if the church stayed in the place of praise until breakthrough came? • What if the church made a clear proclamation of God as good and loving having taken the full punishment for man’s sin in order to restore relationship? • What if the church served the needs of the communities they lived in and showed forth the goodness of God in service to humanity? • What if the church demonstrated the goodness of God in power, healing the sick and setting the captives free?
