Aaronic Priesthood Responsibilities of The Teacher
Aaronic Ministry To the Elder, chosen to preside in any church among you, give due honor, and let him be assisted in the care of his flock by those called to be priests, teachers, and deacons. -----------------Joseph Smith, The Restorer, Volume 2, pages 180-182. While the High Priesthood have the authority to act in all offices in the church, and the elders may act, in the absence of high priests, In all subordinate offices, there is a provision that the Aaronic Priesthood is to serve in many of the temporal, supporting, and preparatory ministries. The men of the Aaronic Priesthood are “To be ordained according to the gifts and callings of God unto him”. DC 17:12a Every Elder, Priest, Teacher, or Deacon, is to be ordained according to the gifts and callings of God unto him; and he is to be ordained by the power of the Holy Ghost which is in the one who ordains him. DC 16:5e And behold, you are they who are ordained of me to ordain priests and teachers to declare my gospel, according to the power of the Holy Ghost which is in you, and according to the callings and gifts of God unto men; and I, Jesus Christ, your Lord and your God, have spoken it. DC 83:5bAnd again, the offices of Teachers and Deacons are necessary appendages belonging to the lesser priesthood, which priesthood was confirmed upon Aaron and his sons. DC 104.10The power and authority of the lesser, or Aaronic, priesthood is, to hold the keys of the ministering of angels, and to administer in outward ordinances--the letter of the gospel--the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, agreeably to the covenants and commandments. DC 83:22 And, behold, the High Priests should travel, and also the elders, and also the lesser Priests; but the Deacons and Teachers should be appointed to watch over the church, to be standing ministers unto the church.
Duties of The Teacher DC 17:11a The teacher's duty is to watch over the church always, and be with, and strengthen them, and see that there is no iniquity in the church, neither hardness with each other; neither lying, backbiting, nor evil speaking; DC 17:11e but neither teachers nor deacons have authority to baptize, administer the sacrament, or lay on hands; All of the Aaronic Priesthood are commanded to “expound, exhort, and teach”. The Priest in addition is expected to preach and the Teachers and Deacons are charged with inviting all to come unto to Christ. DC 42:5a And again, the elders, priests, and teachers of this church shall teach the principles of my gospel which are in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, in which is the fullness of the gospel; DC 42:5b and they shall observe the covenants and church articles to do them, and these shall be their teachings, as they shall be directed by the Spirit; and the Spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith, and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach.
Teachers and Deacons are both expected: DC 17:11f to warn, expound, exhort and teach, and invite all to come unto Christ. Teachers and Deacons are to act As a standing minister unto the church, The Teacher is to preach repentance and remission of sins within their branch. The Teacher is to also: 17:11b see that the church meet together often, and also see that the members do their duty. 17:11c and he is to take the lead of meetings in the absence of the elder or priest.
Scriptural References You will find most of the scriptures making reference to the office of Teacher in the New Testament, Book of Mormon and Doctrine of Covenants. You will find several references of the Aaronic Priesthood or Lesser Priesthood through out all of the scriptures. The Aaronic Priesthood is better known as the Priesthood of Aaron. It was conferred upon Aaron and his seed, throughout all their generations. DC 104.8a DC 83:5b And again, the offices of teachers and deacons are necessary appendages belonging to the lesser priesthood, which priesthood was confirmed upon Aaron and his sons. Old Testament: Numbers 18:1 And the Lord said unto Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy father's house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood New Testament: 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; In the Book of Mormon we can find the following scriptures that refer to the office of Teacher. Book of Mormon: 2nd Nephi 4:42And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did consecrate Jacob and Joseph, that they should be priests and teachers over the land of my people.
Jarom1:24 Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long suffering, the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; Mosiah 11:19 Therefore he consecrated all their priests, and all their teachers, and none were consecrated except they were just men. Mosiah 11:97 And it came to pass that King Mosiah granted unto Alma, that he might establish churches throughout all the land of Zarahemla; and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers over every church. Moroni 3:3 And after this manner did they ordain priests and teachers, according to the gifts and callings of God unto men; and they ordained them by the power of the Holy Ghost, which was in them. Doctrine of Covenants: DC 83:4c Therefore, he took Moses out of their midst and the holy priesthood also; and the lesser priesthood continued, which priesthood holdeth the key of the ministering of angels and the preparatory gospel, which gospel is the gospel of repentance and of baptism, and the remission of sins, and the law of carnal commandments, DC 83:20a Therefore, take with you those who are ordained unto the lesser priesthood, and send them before you to make appointments, and to prepare the way, and to fill appointments that you yourselves are not able to fill. DC 104:8b Why it is called the lesser priesthood is, because it is an appendage to the greater, or the Melchisedec priesthood, and has power in administering outward ordinances.
Challenges That The Teacher Faces One of the most challenging responsibilities faced by the Teacher is that involving members who may have been offended by the actions of another member. Helping the offended parties to confront their feelings and then reconcile with each other is by no means an easy task. We are driven by our emotions and when those emotions go into hyper drive it is hard to slow things down and regain a calm and peaceful spirit. Proverbs 18:19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city; and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. Doctrine and Covanents: 22eAnd thus ye shall do in all cases which shall come before you. 22fAnd if a man or woman shall rob, he or she shall be delivered up unto the law of the land. 22gAnd if he or she shall steal, he or she shall be delivered up unto the law of the land. 22hAnd if he or she shall lie, he or she shall be delivered up unto the law of the land. 22iIf he or she do any manner of iniquity, he or she shall be delivered up unto the law, even that of God. 23aAnd if thy brother or sister offend thee, thou shalt take him or her between him or her and thee alone; and if he or she confess, thou shalt be reconciled.23bAnd if he or she confess not, thou shalt deliver him or her up unto the church, not to the members, but to the elders.
Matthew 6:16 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, who trespass against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you your trespasses Mark 11:27 And when ye stand praying, forgive if ye have aught against any; that your Father also who is in heaven, may forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:28 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. DC 64:2e I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men; and ye ought to say in your hearts, Let God judge between me and thee, and reward thee according to thy deeds. DC 64:2d wherefore I say unto you, that ye ought to forgive one another, for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses, standeth condemned before the Lord, for there remaineth in him the greater sin. Borrowing from the summary of my bother who spoke at the Teachers Presentation with me on 10/12/14 I would like to leave you with these two scriptures: 3:2 After they had prayed unto the Father in the name of Christ, they laid their hands upon them, and said, In the name of Jesus Christ I ordain you to be a priest; (or if he be a teacher;) I ordain you to be a teacher, to preach repentance and remission of sins through Jesus Christ, by the endurance of faith on his name to the end. Amen. 122:17b Let nothing separate you from each other and the work whereunto you have been called; and I will be with you by my Spirit and presence of power unto the end. Amen. JOSEPH SMITH
