  2. Aims of EMG Conduct/sponsor cost effective scientific andtechnical work related to the impact of the oilindustry upon the environment. Focus is to: • Provide scientific data on which industry can base its stance on environmental issues • Develop codes and protocols to promote good environmental practices • Promote discussion and facilitate understanding of technical issues affecting the industry

Key Achievements in 2000 • Publication of Joint report with EA on Use of MTBE in UK and Occurrence in UK Groundwater • “ It is an excellent example of the regulator and industry working together to better understand and protect our environment ” - John Murlis, EA’s Chief Scientist • Presented by EA at major conferences in Nice and US • Used by EA to brief Ministers on UK position

  5. Key Achievements in 2000 • Joint training pack on monitored natural attenuation (MNA) - with EA. Designed for website use. • Code of Practice for Metalworking Fluids (with Health & Safety Exec) • VOC Emission Control and its cost in the petrochemical sector - impact of Gothenburg Protocol and National Emissions Ceilings Directive. (Necessary to defend industry position)

  6. Key Achievements in 2000 • HC Speciation protocol - Comprehensive literature review, sampling and analysis at refineries. At request of UKPIA following EA Improvement Notice on refineries. • Workshop on Oil spill booming plans (with EA/MCA) held in 2000 - Joint guidance due in April 2001. Follow on from EA work highlighting inconsistencies across UK

  7. Highlights of programme for 2001 • Develop work on HC Speciation (with EA) • Operational dispersant application guidelines (with MCA) • Workshop on Health and Safety of Oil spill clean-up operations • GIS (Geographical Information System) mapping and Groundwater sensitivity (with EA) • Communication of Environmental Risk (with EA) • Risk assessment for tank storage in line with IPPC • Review of refinery dioxin emissions

  8. Key FocusPartnership in various forms central to workprogramme: • Ensure consistent industry voice on technical issues • Improve links/understanding with industry regulators (EA, DETR, MCA, HSE) • Leverage of additional funding • Building trust

  9. Future • EMG fully functional and managing programme • Reached a cross-road on future strategic direction • Active discussion on how to utilise group to best of potential • Links to other bodies (universities, trade associations) • Foster developments within IP (debates/meetings) • Website use/possibilities • Proactive participation in environmental debate (custodians of Environment Agenda)
