Size In residential work, the return size is usually based on achieving either a 300 fpm velocity over the gross area of the grille (face velocity), or a 400 fpm velocity over the free area of the grille (core velocity).
Size In commercial applications, the return size may be based on 400 fpm face velocity, or 500 fpm core velocity, or it can be based on a noise criterion (NC) rating.
Filter Grilles In general, the velocity through filters should be fairly low because filter performance and pressure drop are quite sensitive to flow rate. Therefore, filter grilles should be sized for either a face velocity of 200 fpm or a core velocity of 300 fpm.
