  2. 1. Early Life • Born in Porbandar, India • Father died when Gandhi was 13 • At age 19, he moved to Great Britain to go to law school

Life as a Lawyer • Unsuccessful as a lawyer in India • Moved to South Africa • Experienced discrimination personally • Saw how Indians were mistreated and fought for them • Practiced non-violent disobedience to get rights for workers • Illegal marches • Burned registration cards • Encouraged by the success he had

  4. 3. Back to India • Created an ashram in Ahmedabad • Rules: • You must be nonviolent and truthful • You must do farming and spinning for your living • No servants • No personal possessions • Everyone was equal (gender, religion, caste)

  5. 4. Salt March to the Sea • British taxed Indians for salt* • Gandhi led a 240 mile march • The people started (illegally) getting salt from the sea water • Results • 60,000 arrested • Indian self-respect and confidence

  6. 5. Independence for India • Britain gives independence to Indians in 1947, but they create 2 countries instead of just one • India is created as a Hindu country • Pakistan is created as a Muslim country • Result: Gandhi is not happy with the split

Gandhi Assassinated • Hindus and Muslims are upset with each other, and Gandhi • Killings of Hindus and Muslims increased after independence • Didn’t like his idea of “one” community • A fellow Hindu shot Gandhi 3 times, killing him • Upset at Gandhi for trying to reconcile with the Muslims • Felt betrayed

  8. 7. Gandhi’s Goals • Equal treatment of all races. • Equal freedoms for women. • Peace among religions. • Use nonviolence to bring about change.
