April 1991 • Edward R. Madigan, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) blocked the printing of the Eating Right Pyramid. • Claimed the it was too “confusing for children.”
USDA • Children were not the designated audience for the food pyramid. USDA was instead responding to the meat and dairy producers. • USDA’s dual mandate to protect agriculture as well to inform the public about diet and health is a conflict of interest.
