Chapter Summary • Many nations give aid in order to preserve their political image, as well as to receive benefits from the country they are helping.  • In the past years many people have become concerned that the aid that is given may actually make things worse. A good way to improve aid is to go to the country and teach the people how to do things on their own, after which in a couple of years they will be able to maintain themselves and their families.

Facts and Stats • In poor nations, aid accounts for 10% of their national income • Countries who have been able to pull themselves out of poverty have generally received little aid • Over the past 5 decades the West has… • Given $2.3 trillion in world aid • $46 billion per year • $60 per person, per year

Things to be examined… • Countries are more concerned with protecting their political image than helping out the poor for a good reason. • Making a profit out of the aid that is given • “Part of the aim of tied aid is to benefit the donor nation’s own economy” (p.109) Why do we have to get something out of the aid we are giving?

  6. Questions to consider • Do you feel that our giving is selfish and that we only do it to get more out of it? 2. Is it the responsibility of wealthier, more powerful countries to come to the aid of countries in need? 3. Do you feel that just giving money is enough to solve a countries problems, whether it be political, economic, or social?
