Recall from Chapter 2Solving Equations X + 9 = 34 = The Equals Sign tells you that everything must stay in balance. We can do whatever is needed to isolate the variable, BUT remember we have to do that to both sides.

To solve two-step equations • Do inverse operations on addition or subtraction. • Then, do inverse operations on multiplication or division. =
Un-doing an equation= “Snooping for Christmas Presents” Steps to wrapping a present: 1. Put the gift in a box. 2. Close the box. 3. Wrap the paper around the box. 4. Tape the paper. 5. Ribbon and bow. • Steps to CAREFULLY unwrap the present you have found: • Undo the ribbon and bow. • 4. Take off the tape. • 3. Unwrap the paper. • Open the box. • 1. Take out the gift. Solving an equation is similar: undo everything in reverse order.
Can you detect the error here? 4x + 8 = -16 4x = -8 X = -2
