Choosing a Good Book The “FIT” Method
Read the Blurbs • Read the summary on the back of the book (paperback) or the inside cover (hardback). • If you find a book you really like, read the quotes (if there are any) and see which authors liked the book. • Those authors usually have similar styles and you might like books by those authors, too.
Ask Other People • Family favorites • Friends • Book clubs • Librarians or teachers • Best sellers or award winners
5 Finger Method • Open the book to any page and start reading. • Each time you come to a word you don't know put down one finger on your hand. • If you reach five hard words on a page, the book is a bit hard for you at the moment.
Try It • I open to a few random pages and start reading. • If it catches my attention and I want to keep reading, I get it.
Trade It • If you start a book and still don’t like it after reading 20 pages or so, put it back. • Life is too short to waste reading a book you don’t like.
