Transportation Demand Management • P&T is the Department who institutes and administers transportation based on an increased demand to accommodate commuter programs. • P & T offers a comprehensive package of alternative programs to encourage the use of alternative transportation to reduce traffic and parking demand and contribute to the protection of the environment • Currently, more than 50% of campus employees and 90% of students use alternative transportation to travel to and from the campus Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
Sustainable Programs P&T have Implemented AC Transit Pass Programs Employee TransLink Bear Pass • Provides an unlimited ride pass for employees on AC Transit lines • Over 1,000 current participants • Current participation doubles the number of AC Transit users prior to the program • Participants pay a deeply discounted rate • Benefits • Over 250,000 employee rides annually $400+ thousand revenue to AC Transit annually • UC employees pay $37per mo./$444.oo per year with nearly a 50% savings in comparison to what the general public pays to ride AC Transit at $70 per mo./$840 per year • The TransLink card stores value for transit passes like the Bear Pass and also functions as a “SMART” card • Allows access to Muni, Ferries, Transbay Terminal, and soon BART Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
AC Transit Programs • Student Class Pass • Started in 1998 as a pilot program. In 2006, students voted overwhelmingly to continue the program for another seven years • Fully funded through a self-assessed student fee • Unlimited rides on all AC Transit lines year round • Unlimited rides on Campus BearTransit Shuttles • Benefits • 3.5 million student rides and $2 million dollars revenue to AC Transit annually Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
More Transit Programs • Transit Subsidy & Pre-Tax Programs • Monthly subsidy for employees towards purchase of public transit options • Most employees can pay through payroll deduction with pre-tax dollars, realizing 12%-46% savings • Students are eligible for a discount on any high-value BART ticket purchase or a subsidy if purchasing pre-tax • Benefits • Thousands of employees and students participate Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
Campus Shuttles • BearTransit Campus Shuttles • Operates day and night, seven days a week on varying schedules serving the campus and community • Routes serve downtown Berkeley BART, campus parking facilities, campus perimeter, center of campus, the hill campus, and off-site facilities • Free or a nominal fee • The Loop service is available to campus departments that need assistance in transporting • Benefits • Over 500,000 passengers annually Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
Ridesharing • Car sharing and carpooling or vanpooling offer convenient, cost-effective and green alternatives to owning and driving your own vehicle. Discounted parking and reserved carpool parking access offer an attractive incentive to drive with a partner. • Carpools/Vanpools • Two or more person carpooler permit holders pay significantly less than a drive-alone commuter • Reserved carpool parking spaces are available until 10:00am, Monday - Friday • Vanpools come from areas as far as Stockton Benefits • 800 employees carpool & 350 students carpool Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
Bicycle Commuting • Thousands of people commute by bicycle to campus each day • The City of Berkeley has an extensive system of bicycle routes and bicycle boulevards • Over 3,000 free bicycle parking spaces are provided on campus, including secure parking cages • Effective, May 2009, 450 new bicycle racks will be implemented at four locations on campus • Cyclists can travel on most campus pathways and roads • Free bicycle licensing services to campus affiliates • Education and enforcement programs provided • Benefits • As many as 4,500 faculty, staff and students regularly commute by bicycle Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
More Programs • The Loop • The Loop provides intra-campus rides for eligible faculty, staff, and students with disabilities. The Loop cart is a small golf car, which provides rides on a first come first served basis, with priority given to rides needed for an academic purpose. • The Loop operates Monday through Friday, 7:45am to 5:30pm only on the core campus. • Additional Support Programs • Guaranteed Ride Home Program: employees are eligible for free rides in the event of a personal emergency • Carshare: membership provides short-term use of a vehicle Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley

Future Sustainability Programs • Replace aging P&T fleet with hybrid and/or electric vehicles • Use of recycled materials and supplies in our parking facilities, which includes, energy efficient light bulbs and wheel stops made of recycled rubber • 25% of Enforcement staff will be patrolling on foot or bicycle • We are currently using recycled paper • Eliminate paper waste by printing double-sided copies whenever possible • Facilitate and support more vanpools on campus Campus population to grow from 45,000 to 51,000 Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
Technology Plan IMPLEMENTATION OF PHASE II OF THE P&T WEBSITE • Create Google map that allows patrons to view where all parking facilities are located • Determines who can park in a particular parking facility • Details about the number of spaces, height restrictions, hours of UC permit and public parking • Allows customer to better plan their trip Parking & Transportation - University of California, Berkeley
