Types of degrees • Associate’s degree • Vocational or community college • 2 year programs • Bachelor’s degree • College or university • 4 or more years
Master’s degree • College or university • 1 or 2 years beyond bachelor’s • Doctorate or Doctor’s degree • College or university • 2+ years beyond Master’s degree
Certification • Issued by professional association that regulates that career • Must fulfill requirements of education & meet standards
Registration • Overseen by regulatory body in health care area • Administers the exams
Licensure • Government agency authorizes individuals to work in that field • Varies from state to state • Requires a person to: • Complete education program • Pass state board/test • Continuing education, extra training hours in field of expertise
Accredited programs • Make sure school is accredited in program of your choice!! • Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) • Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
Continuing Education Units (CEU) • Required to renew licenses or maintain • Individual must obtain certain number of credits each year to maintain their license.
