Health Services Overview • People working in this field provide health care and support services to address the physical, mental and emotional needs of their clients. • They apply scientific, technical, social and interpersonal skills to diagnose and treat illnesses, document care, provide a therapeutic environment and maintain the health of their clients.

  3. Health Services Overview • Although this line of work probably interests you because of its humanitarian and service aspects, the industry as a whole- hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, etc.- is all business. • The United States spends more than a trillion dollars per year on health care.

Health Services Trends • Runaway Costs- malpractice insurance premiums, soaring prescription drug prices, the increase in the number of uninsured Americans, and rising salaries drive the cost of health care services higher each year. • Consolidation of health insurers- insurance companies continue to merge and consolidate.

  5. Health Services Trends • Hospitals- despite outsourcing, hospitals remain the largest employers in the health care industry. • Specialty Providers- as hospitals attempt to cut costs, they are turning to firms that can provide specialized services at cheaper prices.

  7. Health Services Career Tracks • Dental Hygienists- clean teeth and examine oral areas, head, and neck for signs of oral disease. May educate patients on oral hygiene, take and develop X-rays, or apply fluoride or sealants.

Health Services Career Tracks • Licensed Practical Nurse- Care for ill, injured convalescent, or disabled persons in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, group homes, physicians’ offices, and similar institutions. May work under the supervision of a registered nurse. Licensing required.

  9. Health Services Career Tracks • Dieticians- Plan and conduct food service or nutritional programs to assist in the promotion of health and control of disease. May supervise activities of a department providing quantity food services, counsel individuals, or conduct nutritional research.

  10. Health Services Career Tracks • Occupational Therapist Assistant- Assist occupational therapists in providing occupational therapy treatments and procedures. May, in accordance with State laws, assist in development of treatment plans, carry out routine functions, direct activity programs, and document the progress of treatments. Generally requires formal training.

Health Services Career Tracks • Nuclear Medicine Technologists- Prepare, administer, and measure radioactive isotopes in therapeutic, diagnostic, and tracer studies utilizing a variety of radioisotope equipment. Prepare stock solutions of radioisotope materials and calculate doses to be administered by radiologists. Subject patients to radiation.

Examine eyes and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions.

Health Services Compensation • Below are average salary ranges for a sampling of health care professions: • Registered Nurse: $30,000 to $65,000 • Dietician: $25,000 to $55,000 • Occupational therapist: $30,000 to $70,000 • Physical therapist: $40,000 to 85,000 • Family practice MD: $110,000 to $200,000 • Orthopedic surgeon: $60,000 to $110,000

Health ServicesLove-Hate tips continued • What’s to Hate • Care for Profit- increasingly, the business of health care has come between patients and providers. • The 15 minute Consultation- this is how much time most physicians are allocated per patient these days. • Survival of the fattest- people within the health care system acknowledge that the poor receive a different standard of health care compared with those with the resources to obtain competent health care.

Health ServicesHigh School Coursework • Science, science, and more science- Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Health and even Physics are crucial for pursuing a career in health services. • Math courses are also very important-Algebra, Calculus and even Accounting coursework is helpful. • Introduction to Health Occupations and New Vision Health programs offered at your local Career and Technology center are excellent programs to consider. They can be an excellent starting point towards pursuing a career in the health services field.
