What is Research Day? • The annual one-day Student-Faculty Research Day Conference provides students and faculty with the opportunity to present their research • Held at the Pace Graduate Center in White Plains on the Friday of the last spring weekend session of the Doctor of Professional Studies (DPS) program • Makes attendance convenient for DPS students • Location convenient to NYC and Pleasantville campuses 2013 Research Day
How is the Conference Conducted? • Research Day is similar to external conferences, providing students with a conference experience • The faculty review of papers approximates the standard peer review process of external conferences • Sessions, session chairs, time monitored presentations • Occasional keynote speakers • 2012 – Dr. Fran Allen at centenary of Alan Turing’s birth • 2011 – Accomplished students of Dr. Frank Rosenblatt, the inventor of neural networks called perceptrons 2013 Research Day
Origin of Research Day • Before DPS program, School of CSIS did little research • Pace University was, and still is, primarily a teaching institution • No associated engineering school • Hard science departments, such as mathematics and physics, do little research and basically service the other departments • With the DPS program • Research oriented faculty hired and DPS students conducted research • History of CSIS research platforms • 2001: 6 Pace CSIS papers in MASPLAS 2001 at IBM Research • 2002: Pace CSIS hosted MASPLAS 2002 at Pace Grad Center • 2003: First Pace CSIS Research Day Conference 2013 Research Day
Sources of Research Day Papers • Faculty • Externally funded work, individual faculty research, early versions of papers submitted to external conferences • Doctoral Students (currently from DPS program) • Summarize completed dissertation work, describe ongoing dissertation work, present an extended research proposal • Masters Students • Summarize thesis work, present capstone/other project work • Undergraduates • Present individual work and course project work • Joint work of Seidenberg & non-Seidenberg folks 2013 Research Day
The Michael L. Gargano Annual Research Day • The Research Day conference became “The Michael L. Gargano Annual Research Day” in 2009 • Following Mike’s passing in 2008 • Michael was continually engaged in research activities, often with the students • He contributed several papers, often three or four, to the Research Day conference in the early years • He advised many students in the DPS Program 2013 Research Day
