  2. What is GreenTouch? • GreenTouch is consortium aiming at reducing the energy consumption in the telecommunication network by a factor of 1000 by 2015. It is a relative and not an absolute diminution (definition given later). Mission • By 2015, our goal is to deliver the architecture, specifications and roadmap — and demonstrate key components — needed to reduce energy consumption per user by a factor of 1000 from current levels. • It was initiated by Bell-labs, research arm of Alcatel-Lucent • It was launched on January 11th 2010 • There are 18 founding members: manufacturers (Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, Samsung, Freescale), operators (Swisscom, Portugal telecom, Telefonica, Orange, ATT), research institutes (IMEC, CEA-LETI, INRIA) and universities (Melbourne, Stanford, MIT) • New members have joined: among others, NTT, Vodafone, China Mobile, Korea Telecom, many universities and very recently Broadcom and Fujitsu. At present, there are 35 members . For internal use, Claude Monney, SIS-ICC-ENV

  3. Initial activities • Build research program • First technology demonstration spring 2011 • Large Scale Antenna System, London, February 2011 • Establish common reference architecture • Planned middle 2011 • Define primary research targets • Planned middle 2011 • Establish expected trends on key metrics to 2020 • Planned middle 2011 • Provide international forum for cooperation and exchange of ideas on energy research topics • Open Forum: Amsterdam, Seoul; Workshops at ECOC and OFC For internal use, Claude Monney, SIS-ICC-ENV

  4. Cooperation • Energy trends to 2020 • Equipment evolution models • Semiconductor scaling: International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) • Technology evolution: ITU-T • Building collaboration • INTERNET • TREND • CIAN • WRI/Carbon Trust For internal use, Claude Monney, SIS-ICC-ENV

  5. 25+ Research Projects • Massive MIMO • Green Transmission Technologies • Beyond Cellular – Green Mobile Networks • Large Scale Antenna Systems • Transparent CPE – Virtual Home Gateway • Limits for diverse optical networks • Silicon Photonic Interconnects • Optimal End-to-End Resource Allocation • Time-Driven Switching • … For internal use, Claude Monney, SIS-ICC-ENV

  6. Example of a roadmap towards a 1000 fold improvement in energy consumption (wireline) For internal use, Claude Monney, SIS-ICC-ENV

  7. GreenTouch aims at re-designing the whole telecommunication network to be the most energy efficient one www.greentouch.org For internal use, Claude Monney, SIS-ICC-ENV
