Treatment- Horror Trailer ( Phase 4) Naila Ahmad& NoorChoudhry
Codes and Conventions • These are types of rules and regulations a film industry has to follow when creating films. Different genres have different varied codes and conventions. In a horror genre some codes and conventions are as follows; • vulnerable targets left at home – female or young children • The attempt of heroism fails • The fonts of the captions are creepy or gothic • Blood, violence, paranormal and a murder is a key element of any horror movie • Purpose of horror films is to scare, shock, entice and play on common fears. • Our trailer also follows the guidelines listed that horror films are designed to do and create that impact.
BBFC Rating – 15 certificate • Theme – No theme • Language – frequent use of strong language , rarely used there should not be any continuity • Nudity – no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. • Sex- sexual activity may be portrayed but without strong detail • Violence – violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injuries. • Imitable techniques – dangerous combat techniques such as ear claps ,head butts . • Horror – sustained or detailed infliction of pain or injury is unacceptable. • Drug – may be shown however now clear instructive detail.
BBFC – 18 rating For 18 rating there is no constraint at this level on theme, language, nudity or horror. The board may however cut or reject the following content- any detail portrayal of violent or dangerous acts which is likely to promote the activity. However sex works at 18, the material which appears to be stimulated is generally passed “18” while images of real sex are confined to the R18 category. The BBFC respects the right of adults to chose their own entertainment within the law will therefore expect to intervene only rarely in relation to 18 rated cinema films. After seeing the ratings, me and noor believe that our film or ie trailer should be rated a 18 as it is too horrific to come under a 15 and will not pass that rating.
Trailer/Movie Name After brainstorming of the different names that we can come up with for our trailer me and noor came up with “ cathyln” . The name is there to give an edgy feeling to the audience before they even watch the trailer. Its a name used more in the 1900’s so it gives the vibe of the past tense. Also doing our research we looked at the rumour or ghost fantasy of “ bloody mary” and this is where we thought giving the movie or trailer a real name will make the audience think. The Girl The End Little girl cathlyn 48 hours Name Haunted Forest After 8 The possesed Cathyln The three dead
Brainstorming Ideas. Paranormal Activity – going against the equilibrium theory ( Random Shots , Confusing the audience ) • Couple of teenagers celebrating Halloween, weird stuff occurs and few days later recordings are found. The police investigates. Twist – Person who is possessed goes astray and then group finds him and he had the camera on him all that time. • Reemsha and her bf have an argument and me and noor are recording and walk into the woods not knowing where we are going... • Bloody Mary concept just adapted to cathyln and she haunts only those who have bullied other people severely.
Main Plot & Lighting The aim of our trailer is to attract the audience in watching the full movie. We like to give the audience the shock factor and leave them with confusion and suspense which will make them watch the film. Main Plot:Reemsha and her bf have an argument and me and noor are recording the argument and having a laugh. Then reemsha and we wonder off to the woods and get lost. One of the group members gets lost and sees the spirit of cathyln. She runs to find us and hits the tree and faints. As she wakes up she finds herself in a barred house. She is possessed and recordings are found of voices. Police investigation is how the trailer starts. The spirit has a family line of devil worshipers and she was sacrificed so she comes back to possess anyone entering the woods. We want to shoot the movie as we are part of the film, so the camera is shooting from one of the characters point of view. Characters : ReemshaRaza : Sarah Knight Child : Amar : lucas Noor : Halima Naila : ? Lighting : We want to have low key lighting and keep it dark. By keeping it dark it will give the audience a sense of curiosity because of the dark colours used in the scenes there will be a sense of confusion as there will not be a clear picture of what's happening.
Enigma Codes & Symbolic Codes Enigma Codes: In our trailer we want to achieve some of the enigma codes such as ; what is possession? Is it real? Has everyone died? Is this the end ? And to keep the audience hooked onto the trailer to what will happen next. Keep the continuity going… Symbolic Codes: Spirit : The ghost will be wearing a long white dress which dennotates the sense of purity, however the dark black make up symbolises the bad and the white symbolises the purity of a child. Sarah: She will be wearing casual clothes as she is symbolising a typical teenager girl who has a normal day to day life. She will be wearing light colours to represent her innocence through her clothes. It will show she's vulnerable. Halima: she will be in casual clothes however in dark colours to show her strong minded personality.
Production Schedule Thursday 7th November 2013 4 pm – 6pm Kennedy Park – The woods. We want to take different variety of shots in order to see if this is the correct location or not for our movie. The woods. Deeper end of the woods. 4-6 pm. Mise-En-Scene For Lucas, we want him in casual trackies because we are trying to pursue a casual teenage look. We want Sarah and the spirit in a dress, We want sarah to be in bright however light clothes because we want to pursue this light hearted girl across to the audience. For Halima we want her to wear clothes that are dark so we pursue her as a strong opinionated person who stick to what she thinks and will not change her mind.
Diegetic and Non-Diegetic sound We will be using black screens showing captions and the titles of all the characters and actors as well as director, producer and writer. However the title names will all be shown on one single screen at the end of the trailer because we do not want the audience to build an opinion on the movie because of the actors or actresses casting. We want the audience to be intrigued by the narrative and the suspense not on the casting team. Any other titles shown will have ansyrnronous sounds in the background like the narration, music and some dialogue. Non diegetic sound will be used to create the suspenseful atmosphere and the mood of the scene. Each piece of music will fit in with the tension atmosphere and the pace of the trailer , looking at the attitude and the personality of the character will initiate what music will be added in their scene.
Set - Location We as a group came up with few sets we can use as a location; • Haunted toilets- the haunted toilets we came up with is through the bloody Mary concept, many individuals do get scared by knowing if a toilet is haunted so we thought its a good place to shoot our trailer if we want as the toilet mirror can play a big part in helping to make the scene scarier. • Haunted house- In many horror films, the haunted house plays a big part because that’s the foundation of the story line. So we thought using a haunted house it would be ideal because it is a horror code and convention. • Haunted woods- one recent horror movie ( the conjuring) has used the idea of the woods or the land being haunted and whoever buys properties on that specific land will be haunted. This is where we thought if we use the woods as one our location we are able to justify how we thought of this idea by mentioning the film, the conjuring. However at the same time we want some of the trailer to be shooted at a industrial area, so the tall buildings and cars as that creates more suspense because the area is covered with objects making it hard for the victim to believe that its his conscious mind playing or is it real.
Location Shots This is medium shot of a house that gave us the spooks while taking the photograph. The way the house is structured perfectly goes with our genre. The pointy edges gives the drift of un expected. The moon in the left corner gives the feeling of midnight. It sets the scene for the night paranormal activity. We chose to take a shot of this pathway with the trees on the left side and a busy road because through a research we saw that once you are haunted , you will see the signs everywhere regardless the location ( the unborn) , and we believe we will shoot a scene at this location. A shoot of the gates was taken because we thought we can have the spirit standing on the other side behind the gates so it seems like she is still locked on the other side? , it will cause suspense and add a twist to the trailer and movie.
Location- Shots This area is where we want Reemsha and Amar aka Sarah and Lucas to have an argument. The place is a closed up area so the trailer seems like its being watched by a second person throughout , like all the locations are closed locations and not wide and opened. The 1st photo is of the location where we would like to take our establishing shot from. We want these high buildings to build the atmosphere of a location however not exactly identified where the location is. This ali way is where we want the main character to walk through because it just creates that feeling of being stalked, the narrow pathway.
Location Shots This is the same location to the 1st photo. However this time it is looking from the victims eye towards nothing ( i.e. where the ghost is looking from ). We want to create this affect because we believe it will intrigue the audience. This is a point of view shot from the spirits view. We wanted to show few scenes were the spirit will be looking at the victim as it will give the audience a atmosphere of spookiness. Also the audience will look at the victim from the spirits eye which will show the victim as vulnerable.
