Earliest horror films came out of the GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST style of the 1910s and 1920s. This included The Cabinet of Dr. Caligariand Nosferatu. • These early films were usually based off of GOTHIC LITERATURE such as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(Gothic literature was the1760s-1860s)Many of these came from UNIVERSAL STUDIOS in the 1930s and 1940s.
After WWII, sub-genres of horror evolved, including FEAR OF NUCLEAR WAR. The Thing from Another World and Invasion of the Body Snatchers channeled societal paranoia from the Cold War and genetic mutation into film. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2JhueZVuzU&safe=active • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wgesAdOSV4&safe=active

Technological Advances and Narrative Conventions of Horror Films: • Tracking shots and POV shots- the camera will track/follow a victim. Ex: Friday the 13th • Make-up- make-up became gruesome and realistic, and helps to create the mood of the movie. Ex: Gary Oldman in Dracula http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc-F_uHq_UI&safe=active • Non-diegetic Soundtrack- horror depends on a scary soundtrack to enhance the mood. Ex: Psycho and Jaws • “The Last Girl”- one final survivor is left to fight the villain- usually an innocent, young girl. Ex: Buffy the Vampire Slayer • “Bad things happen at night”- dark/dim lighting is used to conceal the villain and create suspense. Ex: Nightmare On Elm Street uses dark streets, basements to wait for “Freddy” to appear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tomcbDdMeRk&safe=active • The False Ending”- creates a “gotcha” ending in which the killer appears to be dead but attacks at the last moment.
