Mashed Media: A preliminary report on public libraries, youth and 21st century literacy
Foundation Institute of Museum and Library Services Nation of Leaders Demonstration Grant November 2008 – June 2010 NLG-07-08-0113
Rethinking Programs • Do our programs respond to emerging needs of youth and education in 21st Century society? • How do we support staff in developing new skills? • Do our library policies and plans support new programs? • Do our administrative practices support new programs, especially those that involve technology?
What does a library need to offer technology-based programs for youth? • Technology • equipment and software • Administrative Support • Policies and Procedures • Staff • Skills, Training, Time
Free Library of Philadelphia • Organizational structure: supports and obstacles • Staffing, implementation, and institutionalization models • Teens: positive youth development and new technologies
Free Library of Philadelphia • Organic evolution of Media MashUp – how it grew • Future plans for Media MashUp at the Free Library
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library • ImaginOn instituted Scratch workshops during the summer of 2009 as ‘block’ programs. • ‘Block’ programming is what we called our concept of guaranteeing an experience for visitors no matter what time of the day they came in. • Scratch lent itself well to the block model of having youth experiment with small parts of creating something and seeing results right away.
Charlotte Mecklenburg Library • Hands on training sessions held to bring all staff up to speed on using the software. • Programs were held in either the computer lab (15 PCs) or with a laptop on a roving cart so that programs could be held where ever patrons were in the building.
Wilmette Library • Strong administrative support for digital media design programs • Investment of time in learning the tools • Wonderful teen volunteers – help staff and kids
Wilmette Library • Built on existing base of interested kids • Restructure programs and marketing channels • Formal and informal workshops • Digital Literary Magazine
Seattle Public Library • Recognizing the value of digital media/ 21st century skills programming • Spread knowledge, skills and tools across the system
Seattle Public Library • Organizational structure for IT and Public Service conversations • Build approach to teen services that’s grounded in 21st century skills
Memphis Public Library • Monthly labs and workshops • Donated laptops, off the network • Summer Technology Camp for youth
Hennepin County Library • Work with youth as mentors and teachers • Scratch on all library workstations • Scratch workshops as part of regular rotation of technology-related programming
