Taking a Language Sample using the Ipad and a customized Video Reflection Kathy Anderson Brad Hosack Anna Paulson
Grant objectives • To create a platform where taking a language sample is a quick and easy progress monitoring process. • To use technology to simplify the mandatory process of taking a language sample and keeping a running record for service.
QUESTIONS: • How often do you want to monitor student progress? (mandatory = quarterly) • How can we make the collection of authentic data quick, convenient and parent friendly? • What tools do you currently use and how to you track student progress? • What areas do you assess? (Auditory Dev.? Language Dev.?)
OPTION 1 • Use a flip cam or an ipad to take a short clip (30 min.) of the student in their natural environment. • Analyze the transcribed film and use a tool like the CASLLS to document student growth.
Option 2 • Use an ipad to film the student in TWO settings (structured play and natural). • Use a 5 point scale to document current levels in each setting. • EXTREME OPPOSITE of CASLLS. Why? Cassls very detailed – rubric very short.
HOW TO: • Use the Ipad to take a 5-10 minute clip of the child in a VERY STRUCTURED AND PRESCRIBED ACTIVITY. • Upload the video using a custom app. • Use the program to mark the child’s progress on the rubric. • Add notes as needed to the record. • Email results
Next- • Take a 2nd clip of the child – this time in a natural play setting with familiar people, activities and toys. • Upload the clips through the iPad app. Use the rubric to mark student data. Add notes where appropriate. • Save and Send
The Rubrics: Birth – age 1 and Age 1 - 2 • Auditory Behaviors • Speech/Sign Communication • Communicative Interactions with Environment
FOR NOW: • Kathy and I are asking if you are interested in participating in this pilot. • We are asking for you to choose a structured activity to film for each age group TODAY. • We are asking that you commit to filming as many different students as you can (in each age group – both structured and natural) in the next two months. • We are asking that you save the clips until we provide the next step instructions (uploading and analyzing)
