The First Scuba Device • In 1772, Frenchmen, SieurFreminet invented The Rebreathing Device that recycled the exhaled air from inside a metal barrel. • This was the first self-contained air device. • Freminet died from lack of oxygen after being in his own device for twenty minutes.
Chemical Dumping • It wasn’t until 1972 that the U.S banned dumping chemical weapons into the ocean. • 32,000 tons of nerve and mustard agents had already been dumped into the ocean waters off the United States. • 26 chemical weapon dump sites in the ocean • The effects on the ocean are unknown but if it leeks it will last up to 6 weeks before being broken down into something nonlethal
Free Diving • Free diving has been around as far back as 4500 b.c. when people had to dive to find food and seashells or whatever they needed for survival. • Korean woman used to dive to the sea floor to collect pearls and sponges. • In 1911 in the Aegean sea, an Italian flag ship dropped anchor. • Anchor snapped and was lost under 77 meters of ocean. • Several days of unsuccessful attempts lead to the captain searching for someone who could • YorgosHaggiStatti clamed he could do it. • In exchange for five Pounds Sterling and permission to fish with dynamite. • Yorgos locate the anchor and passed a rope through it so that the crew could retrieve it. • Thus becoming the first deep diver in history.
The first Underwater Pictures • The first photos taken of the sea was of the ocean floor by Kenneth L. Hunkins, Bruce C. Heexen,andRobert J. Menxies in 1946 • They took pictures of the Arctic Ocean floor • They noted that their was a lack of life in every aspect.
