Teenage Pregnancy • Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in human females under the age of 20. A pregnancy can take place in a pubertal female before menarche (the first menstrual period), which signals the possibility of fertility, but usually occurs after menarche. In well-nourished girls, menarche usually takes place around the age of 12 or 13.
Teenagers also become pregnant when they are not thinking, getting caught up in the moment, believing they couldn’t get pregnant, not feeling comfortable obtaining contraception, being drunk, feeling pressured to have unprotected sex, and being too embarrassed to ask a partner to use contraception.
Why is it a social issue? • Teenage pregnancy is becoming an important social issue in our culture. Nearly half of the teens in the world have had sex at least once between the ages of 15 and 19. A teen that is sexually active and does not use contraceptive methods, has a “90% chance of becoming pregnant in the first year of having sex.” • Teenagers aren't careful when they do have sex. This is a social issue that can be helped by providing them with education about contraceptive methods, STD’s and education.
Why Is Teenage Pregnancy Difficult To Solve? • Teenagers never mention anything to their parents when they become pregnant until it is late pregnancy. • Most teenagers are rude and take no interest in their parents’ advice. • The relationship will not always be perfect with both teenage parents and therefore one parent is left to take care of the child by him/her self. • Teenagers may not be able to help themselves and or their child therefore they will depend on their parents.
