  3. Depressants • Decrease activity in body • Sedate/hypnotic/tranquil • Prescription- used to help people sleep, relieve stress/anxiety • Short term effects- appear intoxicated, impaired judgment, slurred speech, lose of motor coordination, weak/rapid pulse, cold and clammy skin

  4. Stimulants • Cocaine • Crack • Methamphetamine • Caffeine • Nicotine • Ritalin/Adderall • Amphetamines • Ephedra

  5. Stimulants • Increase alertness and physical activity • Sense of euphoria • Increase in HR and BP • Decrease in appetite • Abuse- irregular HR, physical collapse

  6. Stimulants continued • Short term effects- cause anxiety, blurred vision, sleeplessness, dizziness • Long term effects- delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, violent behavior, withdrawal symptoms

  7. Hallucinogens • PCP • LSD • Mescaline • Psilocybin (Mushrooms) • Ecstasy • Marijuana

  8. Hallucinogens • Cause hallucinations- all senses • Short term effects- panic, “bad trips”, flashbacks, exaggeration of moods • Long term effects- brain damage, impaired memory, reduced attention, mental confusion • Extreme- suicide, accidental death, premature psychosis

  9. Narcotics • Heroin • Morphine • Codeine • Opium • Oxycontin • Methadone

  10. Narcotics • Relieve severe pain, give sense of euphoria, highly addictive • Short term effects- restlessness, irritable, appetite loss, tremors, diarrhea • Physically addictive with withdrawal symptoms

  11. Club drugs • GHB • Ecstasy • Rohypnol • Designer drugs

  12. Other • Inhalants (nitrous oxide, amyl nitrite) • Anabolic Steroids • Marijuana • DXM

Inhalants • Solvents, aerosols, anesthetic gases • Short term effects- nausea, sneeze, cough, nosebleed, fatigue, lack of coordination, loss of appetite • Long term effects- weight loss, electrolyte imbalance, muscle fatigue, brain hemorrhage, permanent damage to brain, nervous system, lungs and passageways.

  14. Steroids • Anabolic-androgenic- man made related to male sex hormone- testosterone. • Athletes use to enhance performance and appearance. • Risks of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis • Adolescents- growth halted prematurely and acceleration in puberty changes

  15. Steroids continued • Side effects- tumors, cancer, fluid retention, HTN, worsens cholesterol, kidney tumors, acne, trembling, aggression, mood swings, violence and depression • Men- shrinking of testicles, low sperm count, infertility, baldness, develop breasts • Women- facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in menstruation, deep voice

  16. Marijuana • THC is active ingredient • Short term effects- impairs sense of time/distance, diminish inhibitions, tremors, paranoia, blood shot eyes, thirst, difficulty dividing attention • Tumors, Tar, Gateway
