Color Quiz Kathy Daugherty
Primary Colors • Subtractive Primary Colors are Red, Blue and Yellow • Additive Primary Colors are Red, Green and Blue (RGB is used by computers and TV) • Can you mix (create) the primary colors from a combination of other Colors? When I was growing up the answer was no, but now I am not so sure. We now know that the primary colors can be Additive or Subtractive. Additionally, we know that almost any color can be mixed by combining any 3 or more colors as long they are not from the same half of the color wheel.
Secondary Colors • Secondary colors are created by combining equal amounts of any 2 primary colors. So when you combine: Red and Yellow you get Orange + = Yellow and Blue you get Green + = Blue and Red you get Purple + =
Tertiary Colors • There are six tertiary colors these color halfway between a primary color and a secondary color. To mix a tertiary color you would blend equal amounts of adjacent colors primary and secondary colors Red + Orange = Red-Orange Blue + Green = Blue-Green + = + = Yellow + Orange = Yellow-Orange Blue + Purple = Blue-Purple + = + = Yellow + Green = Yellow-Green Red + Purple = Red-Purple + = + =
Complementary Color • Complementary colors are colors which are opposite each other on the color wheel. • Red and Green • Red-Orange and Blue-Green • Yellow and Purple • Yellow-Green and Red-Purple • Orange and Blue • Yellow-Orange and Blue-Purple
Monochromatic Colors Monochromatic colors are those that start with a single color hue (a hue being a basic color, either a primary or secondary color) and by adding different amounts of black or white to create shades and tints.
Analogous Color A analogous color schema is created when you use colors which are adjoining each other on a color wheel. Examples of analogous colors are: Yellow-Orange, Yellow and Orange Blue-Purple, Purple and Blue
Color Tint • A tint is a color with white added to lighten color. Here we have started with purple and added white until the tint is almost white.
Color Shade • A shade is a color with black added to darken the color. Here we have started with blue and added black until the shade is almost black.
