The making of the man • John Griffith London was born on January 12, 1876 to Flora wellman a wealthy women from the upper crust of society, and William chaney a journalist, lawyer, and astronmist. The two were un married and young john never knew his father. He grew up in San Francisco where he was raised by an ex-slave nanny becasuse his mother was often times too ill to care for Young John.
