L’imperativo P. Oorts
Types of commands • 3 informal Tu commands: To one person, informally (hey you, do this) Voi commands: To several persons (guys, do this) Noi commands: to yourself and a group of people (let’s do this) • 2 formal • Lei commands: to one person, formally (Sir, (please) do this) • Loro commands: to several persons, formal (Ladies, please do this)
General rule: the Informal commands (tu / noi / voi ) are the same as the regular tu / noi / voi forms of the verb Senti! (listen) Andiamo! (let’s go) Finite! (finish) EXCEPT • The tu form of - are verbs ends on -a: Parla! (161G) • All Tu forms in the negative use the infinitive: • Es. Non parlare! (161H) NB Careful with reflexive verbs: the pronoun gets attached to the end, es. Alzati! Alzatevi! Alziamoci!
Irregular imperatives • vai, dai, stai, dai often become va’ da’ sta’ da’ • Dire: di’ • Avere: abbi, abbiate • only in “abbipazienza” • Essere: sii, siate • only in “siibuono” • pratica • Esercizi: 162 iinsieme • j, k in gruppidi 3 o 4
Formal imperatives (Lei, Loro) are the same as the subjunctives (which we’ll learn in detail later) • Whereas the tu-form usually ends on –i, the Lei-form usually ends on –a (prenda, senta, finisca) • Verbs on -are use that –a in the regular tu command, so they need something else: they end on -i (scusi, parli) • A few irregulars are dare > dia ; venire > venga; andare > vada ; fare > faccia
Irregular formal imperatives • Dare Mi dia un po’ diminestra, per piacere • Venire Venga qui, signore. • AndareVada al primo incrocio, signorina. • Fare Faccia presto, le prego, capitano!
