York & Jane and Finch - A Long History of Engagement University Events and Community Relations (UECR) is a central point of contact, facilitation and co-ordination for the University and local communities on a wide range of community-university engagement initiatives. Jane and Finch is Organized, Mobilized and Proud • Jane and Finch has: • a long history of resident led activism • several established community organizations and coalitions • a culture of celebration and pride
Organizational history Since opening in September 2008, the CEC has established itself as a valuable resource to facilitate community – university partnerships
Accomplisments • We have: • a strong and growing network of both community and university members • effectively supported, showcased and initiated collaborative research activity • expanded York’s commitment to experiential education (EE) and increased the number of EE opportunities for students and have helped increase the community’s interest in EE • supported numerous residents and agency partners transition into, or re-enter, post-secondary studies • helped to build York’s international reputation as leaders in community engagement

Governance and Pan-University Structure • The CEC reports into the office of the Vice President Academic, partnering with several York faculties, ORU’s and non-academic units. • The Centre is guided by, and accountable to, an Executive Committee of community leaders as well as York faculty, staff and students • The Executive Committee members give overall direction and guidance on the operation of the Centre. • The Executive Committee is elected by a general membership of nearly 200 university and community allies.
CEC Organization Chart General Membership: comprised of stakeholders who live and/or work in Black Creek (including York students, faculty, staff, alum) Executive Committee: 10-12 members drawn from General Membership. Equal numbers of stakeholders internal and external to York. Fifty percent of membership need to be Black Creek residents and two members must be youth. Win/win framework CEC supports and enhances current York and/or community activity AND CEC activity develops new programs and collaborations with an emphasis on mutual benefit and a belief that both university and community have something to learn and something to teach This framework has led to some fantastic examples of how we have strengthened previously existing initiatives and how we have developed innovative new ones
Enrich the Educational Experience of our Students • By providing space and by facilitating new projects with our partners the CEC helps connect between 50-80 students a year to a learning experience in the community • Community partners also benefit through • Investing in the skill development of a future workforce • Creating an enriched learning climate in their organizations • Dialogue with the students and faculty - • Access to student’s skills and “extra pairs of hands”
Inter-professional Education Subcommittee • The IPE Subcommittee works to create and supervise interdisciplinary, inter-professional placement/learning opportunities for our students that are responsive to community needs and provide tangible benefits for community partners. Program IPE
Support and enhance community partner activities Partnering with local community groups and programs supports their need for space and other resources while also creating opportunities for experiential education, collaborative research and mutual learning
Research and Knowledge Exchange Working Group • The RKE Working Group encourages collaborative community/university research partnerships to address: • social issues • promote healthier communities • positive social change Research & Knowledge Exchange
Public Education and Access Subcommittee • The Public Education and Access promotes post-secondary education helps create a menu of learning opportunities to meet professional development, access and life-long learning goals Program Public Education and Access
Fertile Ground for New Collaborations CEC staff continue to participate in the work of several community and university coalitions and to support dozens of local projects. Through these we continue to build networks and alliances and create innovative, responsive programs that build bridges between community and university AND amongst York and community partners themselves.
