(Interest Inventory/Aptitude Test-ASVAB) • What education is required for that job? • Don’t let yourself stop until you get what you need to interview, to be qualified, to be hired!
Certificate, Associate’s, Bachelor’s,Master’s, Doctorate…What? • Certificate/licensure programs: usually 6 months to 1 year intensive training • Associate’s: usually 2 years • Bachelor’s: usually 4 years • Master’s: after Bachelor’s-usually 1-2 years-usually requires a thesis (research) • Doctorate (Education): follows Master’s- requires extensive research. • Doctorate (Medical): 2 years academics, 2 years rotations, 3-7 residency, specialization. Applying to Tyler Junior College? • Complete an application • Send an official transcript • Take Accuplacer or show proof of exemption Already enrolled at TJC? • Send them an official transcript with your graduation date or they will not release your transcript. REL does not send your TJC transcript.

Application Fee: fees range from free to upwards of $80 • Essays, if required. Write from the heart. Colleges want to see a student who can think, has ideas and opinions and can express themselves on the written page. Have teachers/admissions reps critique (Harvard example). • Resume, if required. Example in your handout. • Letters of recommendation: prepare a Brag Sheet to tell your recommender everything they ever wanted to know about you. Give them at least 3 weeks notice, and a stamped, self addressed envelope to mail your letter in. (folder) • Always opt for the scholarship application. $$$$

I know that you have insight into his/her background, interests, special talents and ambitions. Although you may feel biased, I welcome and appreciate your comments. When completed, please ask your son/daughter to return your comments to me. Please answer all questions in FULL on a separate sheet of paper.
