Laodicea – • Indifferent Church • Revelation 3:14-22
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Introduction. • A. Last of the seven churches of Asia – inspected and judged by Christ.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • B. Had received instructions, Col. 4:16, “Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.” Same teachings contained in the other letters.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:14, Christ, the Amen – His word is final; His promises and threats are guaranteed. • -- “Faithful and true witness”, competent, qualified to testify, trustworthy. • -- Has perfect knowledge, cannot misrepresent anyone, is impartial.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Christ, “the beginning (Beginner or Originator) of the creation of God.” Jn. 1:3, “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Col. 1:15, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” • Compare Ps. 89:27, “I will make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Watchtower witnesses blaspheme Christ -- say that Christ was the “first being created.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:15, I know your works – He says this to all “seven” churches. He knows the deeds of the church here.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- You are not “cold” – like the unconverted, worldly, even opposed to Christ. • -- You are not “hot” – boiling (Rom. 12:11), extreme enthusiasm Paul.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • “I wish that you were cold or hot” – Why? There is hope of converting “cold” unconverted people or “hot” sectarians.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- Jesus thinks the unconverted are better off than the half converted indifferent member. • -- Because the lukewarm member deceives himself, believing that the Lord accepts his half-hearted service.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:16, “Because you are luke-warm” – Indifferent, negative attitude toward good and evil (they are neutralized in his heart).
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- The indifferent have a “big” heart that holds the church and the world at the same time!
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- Prov. 18:9, “He who is slothful in his work Is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.” • -- Jer. 48:10, “Cursed be the one who does the LORD'S work negligently.” Indolent, apathetic, lazy, no taste for spiritual activity.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- 2 Sam. 24:24, “I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God which cost me nothing.” • -- Need to apply this to all our “offerings”: hymns, prayers, class, sermon, personal work.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- “I will spew (Lit., vomit, NASB, margin) you out of my mouth.” • -- Very strong emotion. He Is disgusted with indifferent members, they make Him nauseated (sick at his stomach!)
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:17, They had a very high but mistaken concept of themselves. “I have need of nothing.” • -- Laodicea was a very rich city. They did not even ask for help to rebuild after an earthquake.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- The church shared that attitude of self-sufficiency, self-complacency. “We don’t need anything from anybody.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- How did Christ see them? “You do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” • -- 1 Cor. 15:19, “most to be pitied.” They say, “We’re outstanding Christians” but what does Christ think of them?
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- “Poor” – Richest city of the area, but did not have treasures in heaven, Matt. 6:19, 20; 1 Tim. 6:17, 18. Not “rich toward God,” Luke 12:21.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- “Blind” – had a medical school that specialized in anointment for eyes (collyrium), but blind to their responsibilities. • 2 Pet. 1:9, “he who lacks these things is short-sighted … blind”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- “Naked” – Laodicea was the industrial center of clothing, but church was naked, for not having put on the new man.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Col. 3:12, “put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering .. 14 above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” This is our UNIFORM
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:18, Buy gold from Christ in order to be rich. Banking center of Asia Minor, but poor. Lacked the abundant riches of His grace.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- “White garments” – obtain forgiveness, be cleansed of their guilt (shameful nakedness).
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Rev. 7:14, “"These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Rev. 19:7, “"Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. 8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- “Anoint your eyes with eye salve that you may see” – your sad condition and the need for repentance.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:19, “Be zealous and repent” – Cease being lukewarm, indifferent, negligent. Humble yourselves, have change of attitude.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:20, Christ at the door. He was outside of what? They had excluded Him from His church. He wants to enter and have fellowship again.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • -- Just think! The indifference of the members casts Christ out of His church … and causes them to be vomited out of His mouth.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • 3:21, “He that overcomes” what? Other churches had to overcome when persecuted. This church had to overcome neglect.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • “I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” • Share in His reign – even after death!
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Same as Rev. 2:26, “And he who overcomes, and keeps My works until the end, to him I will give power over the nations –27 'He shall rule them with a rod of iron; They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter's vessels' -- as I also have received from My Father.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Also Rev. 20:4 “Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Conclusion: But the lukewarm church is excluded from this promise.
Laodicea – Indifferent Church • Because if we put Him “outside” of His church, He will leave us on the “outside” … forever!
