  6. Preliminary NGRIP basal ice results DRILLING FLUID CONTAMINATION IN PINK ICE:-100 mM to 20 mM ethanol-Ethylene glycol and peaks in the aromatic/amine and hydrocarbon region -Redrilling of frozen water questionable for scientific assessment PARTICLES IN PINK ICE:-Nearly all material mineral-Grain size fairly homogenous at 1-5mm; subangular -A few larger grains up to ~ 30mm; mainly biotite MINERALS IN PINK ICE :-Quartz, Amphibole, Albite, Hornblende, and K-feldspar with Fe coating and FeOxide coating on biotite.-All primary rock forming minerals, consistent with subglacial till.CELL NUMBERS IN PINK ICE:-1.6±0.38 x 103 cells ml-1 (Sample A3) IN GLACIAL ICE:-some large organic fragments up to 100mm long (not seen in the pink ice)-little mineral material.
