Welcome to Boardmaker • What is Boardmaker? • Boardmaker is a graphics database containing Picture Communication Symbols that can be used to create a variety of communication materials. • What can I do with Boardmaker? • Boardmaker allows you to quickly create communication boards, device overlays, worksheets, schedules, calendars, etc. • The symbols can be made and edited to any size, used in color or black and white, and displayed with text in a variety of languages.
Learner Objectives • Learners will locate and create at least four different desired picture symbols of equal size. • Learners will edit a picture symbol by changing at least one of the colors and replacing a word or phrase. • Learners will modify a picture symbol by erasing part of the picture and adding in another line. • Learners will combine two picture symbols into one and change the word/phrase to match. • Learners will copy and paste picture symbols from Boardmaker into a word-processing program to create a short social story, which will include at least four picture symbols.
Let’s begin! • Open Boardmaker program • Click on the Boardmaker icon • Click on “Open a New Board”
Getting to know your workspace This is your board workspace. Some of the common tools you will use in this workshop are: Symbol Finder Tool Button Tool Button Sprayer Tool Refer to handout for more information on the tool buttons.
Creating a button • First, you must decide on the size and shape of the button. Click on the Button Tool. • Start at the top-left of the workspace. Click and drag your crossbar to the desired size and shape. • Look at the rulers on the top and left for the red indicators while dragging.
Creating multiple buttons • Click on the Button Sprayer Tool. • Position your cross mouse inside the first button you just created and drag until the desired amount buttons appears. • Now you’re ready to fill these buttons with picture symbols!
Creating a picture symbol • Click on the Symbol Finder. • Type play in text box. • Click arrow button to browse until you find a symbol you like. • Click in one of the buttons on your workspace.
About the Symbol Finder • You can also view the picture symbols as thumbnails. • Click the thumbnail button; select a picture; then select a button on your workspace.
Editing the picture symbol • Select a picture symbol on your workspace with the pointer tool. • The Paint Tools menu will appear.
Changing the color of a symbol • Click on the Color Tool and choose a color. • Click on the Fill Tool. • Position the “spilling paint” where you want it colored and click. • Click on the Pointer Tool when done.
Editing words or phrases • Click on the Text Tool. • Then click on the word(s) to be changed. • Type in desired word/phrase.
Adding in lines • Click on picture symbol. • Paint Tools Menu appear. • Select the Pencil Tool and draw.
Erasing part of the picture • Click on picture symbol. • Paint Tools Menu appear. • Select the Eraser Tool and rub over area to erase.
Merging 2 symbols in 1 picture • Find a symbol to add. • Click in a button box. • Click “Add To”. • Click on Pointer Tool. • Position and resize. • Change text to match.
Write a social story • Take a few minutes to write a short social story your student may need. • Type in a word processing program. • Triple-space between lines. • Some possible ideas: • Fire Drill • Earthquake Drill • Lock Down Drill • Off-campus Drill • Going to Mainstream Class • Going on a Field Trip • Others?
Social stories using Boardmaker • Open Boardmaker and shrink window (small enough to see both WP & BM). • Find the picture symbols you want to use. Edit as necessary (color, size, erase, lines, merge, etc.).
Social stories using Boardmaker • Copy the symbols from Boardmaker (file/copy) and paste into WP program (file/paste). • Save as word-document and print.
