  3. Microfiche Digitization Project Objectives • Digitize the INIS microfiche collection • Improve on-line access to full-texts • Ensure long-term preservation of the digital collection

  4. Key Issues • Prevent duplication of digitization efforts • Ensure efficient monitoring and coordination of the project • Ensure good communication with the contractors • Ensure efficient matching of full-texts with INIS records

  5. Constraints • Limited resources • Limitations of existing tools and databases • Microfiche retrieval and digitization based on Report Number

  6. Microfiche Scanning • Two contractors • Basic Supply Agreement (BSA012.2008) • Scanning of 3,500,000 pages between 2008 and 2010 • 2011-2013: 3,500,000 pages • Since 2004 over 10,5 million microfiche frames have been digitized • Image enhancement, QC, OCR, conversion to PDF done by DPIG

  7. INIS NCL Collection on Microfiche • 312,852 reports, patents, miscellaneous • 500,264 INIS NCL records • From Volume 1 to 27 (1970 to 1996) • Average of 1,6 References / Microfiche • > 97 % of cases, 1 MF = 1 RN • < 3 % of microfiches contain 37% of all NCL records

  9. Microfiche Digitization – 2011-2013 • Scanning of additional 3,500,000 pages(from ~ 75,000 NCL reports on microfiche) • Gradually get all NCL reports digitized by other institutions (at the moment ~ 24,000) • QC, QE, OCR and PDF output • By Q4/2013: All Microfiches scanned

  10. Microfiche Digitization – 2011-2013 • Also planned (depending on available resources) • Creation of separate PDF files for analytics of PUBLICLY available full-texts • Add value to existing full-texts (e.g. OCR of full-texts in languages that were not supported until now)
