4 a. • Generally very good, though very few people mentioned that they discussed what to do about japan. • People who didn’t score well was because they explained what they did at Potsdam rather than WHY they met. This could result in you gaining zero marks. • 4 bi + ii • Try to aim for 3 developed answers (PEE= Point, Evidence, Explanation). • Remember Stalin dies in 1953- this then leads to de-stalinisation. • Joe- you ticked that you had answered 4ii but you had I fact answered 4i. This could result in you getting zero. • Handwriting- Joe- one word I decoded was ‘salami attack’???!!!!! • 4 C • Berlin Airlift • Marshall Aid • Comecon • Arms race • Nato • Warsaw Pact • 1949- Marks the end of the Berlin Airlift. • Don’t confuse Berlin blockade/ airlift with the Berlin crisis (building wall 1961). • Nato 1949- Warsaw Pact 1955- Could you really say one led to the other? • Bullet point plan- Daisy Aim for 3 PEE paragraphs = 9 marks. Make links and/or prioritise = 12 marks
5 i • Emily- very good explanation of how Cuba made Kennedy look weak and foolish. • Louis- don’t bullet point answers unless you are running out of time. • Alex- “the USA looked people laughed at Kennedy.” too informal. However • Alex- “people began to question Kennedy as a leader” A much more mature response. • Lots of students explained that many Cubans were “kicked out” under Castro. Exiled would be a much more academic phrase. • 5ii • Mattie and Kate- good use of quote “socialism with a human face”. • Kate- good reference to the Brezhnev document, but didn’t explain what it was • 5C • Iron Curtain- don’t get it mixed up with the Berlin Wall. • Kate- Good use of connectives- “consequently “ “as a result” these almost force the examiners to give you marks. • Refer back to the question- Flashpoint (nearly turned the Cold War hot). • Harvey- well done for defining what flashpoint means. • Don’t just put “this was another reason why Berlin was a flashpoint” at the end of each paragraph. Need to explain why.
5C • Good links “The hole in the iron curtain led to the refugee crisis. • Sophie- Good use of specific details (precise information)- 20,000 people left each day. • Sophie- good explanation of how West Berlin was used as a piece of propaganda to show that capitalism was superior to communism. • 1958 ultimatum was made to Eisenhower not Kennedy. • Sophie- best explanation of thchanging relationships between the Paris Conference (when Eisenhower was president) and Vienna (when Kennedy was now president.) • Emily- excellent spelling out of the links “linking to this”!!!!!! • Results suggest that Berlin question was probably best answered as a PEEL rather than a PEEP.
