How is most of the land in the U.S. used? What does this chart show?
Rural vs. Urban • Urban: mostly buildings and roads, high population density • Rural: few people, largely open space • What is suburban? • What is more valuable?
Urban vs. Rural • What “role” do these land uses play? • How do we decide where to build and where not to build? • What determines the value of land?
Land Use • Urbanization: movement of people into cities • Increasing • What are pros/cons of people moving into cities?
Land Use Infrastructure: all the things we build to support living • Buildings • Roads • Sewers • Water treatment plants • Powerplants Environmental/ societal costs?
Impacts of Cities • Can you list some impacts cities have on the environment?
Land Use Planning Land Use Planning: determining in advance how land will be used • Where do we put Houses, schools, businesses, roads, factories, etc. • What land should be left open?
Conservation Conservation: keeping land as parks, open space, farmland, forests, wilderness • Protected from development • Why should we do this?
Parks and Wilderness Wilderness: an area of land and ecosystems protected with very limited human interaction. • No roads, motorized vehicles, far from human development
