Introductions • An introduction has 4 parts…. They are…… • AGD • Link • Thesis • Forecast
1. Attention-Getting Device • The opening words of your speech that should “grab” your audience’s attention. • DON’T STATE TOPIC IN AGD!!!!!! • There are many types of AGD’s • Asking Questions • Making References • Startling statement • Giving a quotation • Telling a story
Asking Questions • Rhetorical Questions: don’t need a response or answer • they ask audience to answer them in your head • they answer themselves a lot of times
Making References • You might refer to people in the audience, your physical surroundings, or significance of others. • Don’t make a casual reference to someone in the audience whom you barely know. • References are supposed to get your speech off to a good start
Make a startling statement • Startling statistcis • Be careful not to offend
Quotes • Repeating the exact words that someone else has said. • Add a degree of style and sophistication to speech presentations • Tennesee Williams once said “Enthusiasm is the most important thing in life.”
Telling a story • Gets you “in” with your audience • Keep it short and to the point
2. Link • Comes between the attention getter and the thesis statement and logically connects the two. • Develops a “bridge” between the audience and the topic
3. Thesis • The statement that states what your topic is • “Today I will be talking about… _____” • These are the exact words you’ll say for your thesis in any speech
4. Forecast • Stating the three areas you’ll be talking about • Just like a weather forecast, it predict what will be said in the speech. • First I’ll be talking about my background, then my hobby, and last a problem facing the world.
Conclusion • 1 Restate Thesis-”Today I talked about ____” • 2 Restate Forecast- “First I talked about ___, then ____, and finally ______” • 3 wrap up and refer back to AGD (don’t REPEAT IT!!!)
Example • When you think of pizza, do you think of mice and games? • Well, I don’t necessarily do, but pizza sure does remind me of some where I love to go. • Today, I will be talking about Chuck E Cheese • First, I will be talking about how it was founded, what is there to do, and what my favorite game is.
