Clash of Values/ Nativism • Immigration rose after WWI, causing Racism • Sacco-Vanzetti Case- murdered two men during a $15,000 robbery; men were anarchists • Anarchists- people who oppose all forms of Gov’t • They were tried, found guilty, and executed, but people defended their racial differences • Return of the Klu Klux Klan in 1915; in addition to Blacks, targeted Jews and Catholics

  3. The New Morality • Glorified youth and personal Freedom; appealed to women • Fashion took a turn • Bobbed Hair • Silk Stockings • Flapper dress (short) • Flapper- young, dramatic, stylish and conventional women • Portrayed as cigarette smoking, liquor drinking, and dressing scantily

  4. Prohibition- banning alcohol • Volstead Act- National Prohibition Act that led to the 18th Constitutional Amendment • Created Gang Bosses who could profit from alcohol • Speakeasies- secret bars where illegal drinking and gambling was allowed • Encouraged women to flapper attire and behavior
