  1. Review • 1. What is organic chemistry? • 2. Is CaCO3 considered an organic compound? • 3. How did Wohler challenge the vitalist theory? • 4. List 4 examples of naturally occurring organic compounds. • 5. What types of bonds would the carbon in this molecule have? • HCN

  2. Section 3: Hydrocarbons Chapter 25: Carbon and Its Compounds

  3. Hydrocarbons • Organic molecules that contain only carbon and hydrogen • C and H have similar electronegativities • = nonpolar bonds • Properties: • Poor conductors of electricity • Low density • Low boiling point • Low melting point • Insoluble in water

  4. Hydrocarbons • Hard to find because C reacts readily with O and N • Have to dig deep in the earth • Fossil fuels • Hydrocarbons more common on other planets

  5. Hydrocarbons • Structures and Formulas • C can form single bonds, double bonds, triple bonds, straight chains, branched chains, rings • Molecular formula: C3H8 • Structural formula: • Condensed structural formula: CH3CH2CH3
