Symbolism • Using an object to represent an idea, character or theme. • Ex: the mockingbird in To Kill a Mockingbird represents innocence
Theme • The main message or meaning of a story • “Life lessons” that run throughout the entire story • Ex: One theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is not to judge someone before you know them.
Flashback • Pieces of writing within a story that take place in the past • A memory • an author might use flashbacks to events that took place before the action and events of the story’s plot
Mood • The overall feeling or atmosphere of a work of literature. • A writer can create a specific mood for his/her audience by focusing on word choice, types of imagery, descriptions and settings • Example: horror stories often create a spooky mood by describing creepy settings such as cemeteries, rainy evenings, and dark, cold places
Imagery • Descriptive details that create a mental picture or image for the reader • Usually related to the five senses- sight, smell, touch (texture), sound, taste • Imagery can be used to set mood, describe settings and give readers a clearer picture of what is happening in the story. It can make readers feel like they are there. • Example: we looked at “Blackberry Picking”- “Big dark blobs,” “Plate of eyes,” “tinkling”
Tone • Refers to the author’s attitude • Created through word choice and sentence structure • Ask yourself- how does the author seem to feel about this topic? • Examples of tones: • Sarcastic • Humorous • Sad • Angry
Suspense • A feeling of tension that moves the plot forward
Foreshadowing • Clues about what will happen in the future of a story or piece of literature.
Dialect • The way a group or region of people uses language. • Includes slang, idioms and accents
