Eltham High School: TAG LINE: “Actions are a reflection of your thoughts.” Mitchell C and Joey- Volunteering in the community BIG IDEA SUMMARY: How do you become a volunteer in the community? How can I volunteer to help young people overseas? DESCRIPTION: We want to find out about the role of volunteers in our community. We want to know what people get out of it and what it feels like (first-hand). We would like to do a project that documents life as a volunteer in our community and we would like to use this information to help others by becoming a volunteer. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What role does a volunteer play in the community? Where can people go to volunteer in the community? How can we volunteer? Who can we help in our community? How can we help young people overseas i.e. third-World countries like Cambodia?

  6. Isabella- Life in remote Australia BIG IDEA SUMMARY: What is life like for aboriginal people in Arnhem Land? DESCRIPTION: I want to find out how people live in a community in Arnhem Land and what barriers they face. I want to know what Aboriginal people want/need and how my community can exchange cultures. I would like to do a project that involves learning about Australia’s history and visiting an aboriginal community in remote Australia. I plan to make a documentary from my experience and show others at my school. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Who would use a fitness circuit in our community? Where do people already go to play sport or keep fit in the community? Who can help us get the circuit constructed e.g. builders, Councillors, fitness industry? How do we get permits, etc?

  7. Aleks- Health and education in a 3rd World country BIG IDEA SUMMARY: How can our community help children in a third-World country? How do young people live in third-World countries? What is a third-World country? What do young people need in a third-World country? DESCRIPTION: I want to find out about the needs of young people in Kenya. I want to know how young people live and what they need to improve their education and health. I would like to do a project that informs our community and gets others involved in assisting a community in Kenya. I would like to volunteer and assist a community project in Kenya; e.g. a mosquito prevention kit to prevent the spread of typhoid and yellow fever that could be transported through aide agencies. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What companies/ organisations help the young people in Kenya? What causes these people to be less fortunate? What do young people in Kenya have to do daily to survive? What is the mortality rate for young people in Kenya? How can we improve health for the young people in Kenya? How can people in our community help? Is there an Embassy or Consulate in Australia? How much education do young people in Kenya receive?

  8. Adrian– whale welfare BIG IDEA SUMMARY: What are the pro’s and con’s of whaling? Who is responsible for the welfare of whales? What should/ could we do to help whales? DESCRIPTION: I want to find out about the threats to whales and how I can protect them. I want to research the organisations responsible for protecting whales and raise the awareness of these issues to people in our community. I would like to make people more aware of whaling and gain their support through a documentary that involves the work done by the ‘Rainbow Warrior’ or the ‘The Sea Shepherd’. I would like to board The Sea Shepherd and take others with me to interview people first-hand. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What threats do whales face in the World? What programs, services and organisations exist for protecting whales? What impact will the loss of whales have? What activity would young people in our community be interested in doing to support whale protection e.g. adopt a whale, go whale-free?

  9. Grace- What motivates young people? BIG IDEA SUMMARY: What motivates young people? What barriers/ opportunities do young person have to deal with? Why are some young people unmotivated? What are the affects on the community? DESCRIPTION: I want to find out about life for a variety of young people in my community and work out what motivates them and what doesn’t engage them. I want to know what young people think about their education, social life and support networks. I would like to do a project that documents our youth culture; their views, motivation factors and challenges and show this to my community. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What do young people do for recreation/ hobbies in Eltham e.g. sport, music, video games, and movies? What is school life like for the average young person in Year 9? What do they do after school e.g. work, music lessons, party, sport, etc..? How is life for young people in Eltham different or the same as most of Australia’s youth? What motivates young people? When are they unmotivated- what are the barriers? How could we engage young people better at school? What do they want?

  10. Lachlan- Are video games important to all young people? BIG IDEA SUMMARY: Do video games improve or destroy young lives? Where are video games going in the future? DESCRIPTION: I want to find out what video games interest young people in my community and work out how this affects individual’s life skills. I want to know what young people think about the effects of interactive games on people’s psyche. I would like to do a project that informs people about video game culture and the pro’s and con’s to society. I will do workshops to improve my knowledge on computer software and create a small animation if time permits. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What genre of video games do most young people enjoy? What barriers/ opportunities in life do young people get from playing video games? Why do some young people like to play violent video games? What are the affects on the community? Have interactive games gone too far? Are people able to face ‘real life’ situations? How do I go about producing a computer generated product?
