Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Our title sequence conforms to the thriller genre, it challenges the genre through the music we used and the dark aura we have wrapped around the sequence, we created this sense of darkness though the lighting we used, the room we first allocated ourselves within was a shut off garage which worked perfectly when we had switched off the lights to create a pitch black area, the only lighting we used was that from the computer screen which fitted perfectly to creating a silhouetted figure that we had originally planned on succeeding. We also created this state of darkness through the clothing we dressed our character in, we used a black hooded jumper and dark jeans to show the state of mind the character may have. We took inspirations from films such as Harry Brown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2S3SraFmI0and) Halloween, which also suggest that our opening sequence is a slasher thriller. The main theme of our film is psychological disturbance, obsession, murder and revenge to try and regain order within society due to the ever growing crime rate through teenagers. It challenges the conventions of the genre through us trying to make it dark and quiet as a thriller should be. Also, the clothing and, weapon and mystery behind the character also contribute to these factors. We decided not to give too much away about the character, his age, features, social class, history, occupation and ethnicity. We done so because in common day thriller films the murderer/killer is not fully published in view until very late in the film. We also decided to do the same with the mise-en-scene factors of our opening sequence due to the same reason. For the duration of our thriller, we used a variation of different cinematography techniques to emphasise the idea of tension building in the audience.
Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? We tried representing the character within our film from a working class background, we used normal civilized clothing and a family house to try and accomplish this. Our characters appearance reflects that of Harry Brown in “Harry Brown” due to same characteristics of revenge and order to be re-stored within society. Our film is an age limit of 15+ we used this age limit because our final project is based on the popular social networking site “Facebook” which thousands of teenagers use a day. We had the idea that we wanted to make people aware of the dangerous through the internet and how you can be victimized. Especially females.
Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? The media institution that might distribute our media project would be a small company such as Revolver (http://www.revolverfilms.com/) instead of a big conglomerate company such as Sony (http://www.sony.net/) which has several sections to the company, they produce electronics, they’re a record and film company and also a leading game development/manufactor compan. They allow the go-ahead for movies to be made that achieves many unique selling points. The reason being our movie to be distributed from a small company is because it is a low budget film.
Q4. Who would be the audience for your media project? Our audience for our media project is 15+, early age teenagers, female and male. Teenagers who enjoy thriller as well horror movies, our film is similar to Harry Brown and Halloween, it consists of a narrative which isn’t too complex that it would limit potential audiences. They would also highly likely watch other films such as Hard Candy, the Friday the 13th franchise. Harry Brown attracted audiences by releasing posters, billboard posters, teaser trailers, short-length trailers and world premieres on the red carpet. It also attracts audiences from the use of a star actor Michael Caine who is most notable for his performance in The Italian Job (1969).
Q5. How did you attract your audience? We used different ways to attract our audience. Firstly, we created a Film Release Poster to promote our film we studied into how thriller genre posters are constructed with how the designer used the text and images to make their film look more appealing. We also presented a pitch to an audience and explained the plot of our film and what inspiration of films we followed, we explained what age limit our film is aimed at and how we were going achieve the right features to reach the target audience. We also used a slight reference to the social networking site Facebook to appeal to our audience, we used Facebook as a fishing line to hook in our audience because hundreds of people use Facebook every day and we feel that this would attract them to watch our film sequence.
Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your product? During the process of constructing my project I have learnt that technologies today have excelled and improved dramatically since the earliest of films. You can use different camera settings and options to make your film to the highest quality. Also, evolution of cameras by being able to view films in 3D, digital and Imax qualities are dramatically improved how we create and consume the movies made today, whether it be made with CGI or animation. We are able to consume these products through many different platforms of electronics such as computers, TV, Ipods, DvD players and many others You are able to use different audio devices detached from the camera to create different sounds, non-diagetic sounds which are applied to the film during editing for example: narrative commentary, sound effects added for dramatic effect or mood music. In our film we used non-diagetic sounds and added in mood music to create a nerving atmosphere within the viewer.
Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? I have learnt and excelled in my knowledge of creating a short film between my preliminary task and full product. I’ve learnt how to edit the scenes I capture to make a clean continuous film this also files in with learning the settings of the camera I used and what would be best for what lighting or what setting we are recording in for a better capture quality. I have also achieved skills within working with others and learning how to co-operate with others, also to listen to others ideas, working with others helps towards planning the film we have in mind and every contributing factor we had imagined to be able to produce a good quality captured film. I think the key concept of my preliminary task was definitely the planning of the short clip. This helped me to understand how different peoples ideas where and helped me to broaden and sharpen my mind to evaluate on their ideas and merge them with what I had in mind. Me, Jacob and Harry are all hands-on people who want to get straight into making our film, however we are all good at achieving successful inputs towards making the film
