Her childhood… • Gerty Cori was born in Prague, Austria Hungary on August 15,1896. • She was the oldest of three daughters. • Her father arranged for her to be tutored at home. She was educated by a private tutor until the age of 10, she then entered a school for girls to learn culture and social etiquette. • When Cori turned 16, she met a high school teacher who taught her three years of Latin over the course of one summer. • Within two years Gerty mastered all the subjects necessary to pass the university entrance examination. • She entered Carl Ferdinand University of Prague, in 1914, with plans to study medicine, the common pathway to her desired career in biomedical research
Her parents… • Her father Otto Radnitz, was a chemist and a general manager of a beet-sugar refinery. He suffered from diabetes. • Her mother Martha Radnitz, stayed at home with her children and encouraged Gerty to follow her dream.
Her job… • Her research focused on carbohydrate metabolism. • She won a Nobel prize in physiologyfor her discovery of catalytic conversion of glycogen.
Her family….. • Her husband Carl worked with her and she became his assistant. They moved to America in 1926 her husband changed the spelling of his name when they moved. • They had one child Carl Thomas Cori in 1936. he was not interested in following his parents footsteps into academic research. He earned a doctorate degree in chemistry .
