Pg. 225. • Write this scientific name correctly. canis latrans http://www.biology4kids.com/files/studies_taxonomy.html http://www.biology4kids.com/files/studies_kingdoms.html

  2. Scientific Names • Scientific name = Genus + species • Genus is capitalized. Species is lower case. • Scientific names are the same all over the world so that scientists can _____________. communicate • Scientific names are usually _________ or ____________ and contain information about the organism. 8. Agenda Feb. 23 1. Pages 222- 227 – Read about classification and on notebook paper, write 10 questions on the front and the answers on the back. ***At least 2 of your questions have to be Costa level 2 (label them) and at least 1 has to be a Costa level 3 (label it). Hand in!!!!!! 2. Do Cornell notes for pages 222-227. 3. Answer the questions on page 227. Hand in 4. Do the practice ws….front table. Check

  10. Suppose you have four insects a ladybug, a housefly, a dragonfly and a grasshopper. After studying the insects, you might use wing covering, body shape, and where the wings point towards. To begin the key, you could start separating the four insects based on wing covering - "wings covered by exoskeleton" vs. "wings not covered by exoskeleton." • The statements in a dichotomous key need to lead the observer to the next step to narrow the identification further: • 1. a. wings covered by an exoskeleton ………go to step 2 • b. wings not covered by an exoskeleton ……….go to step 3 • Next a pair of statements will allow for the identification of the ladybug and the grasshopper: • 2. a. body has a round shape ……….ladybug • b. body has an elongated shape ……….grasshopper • Last a pair of statements will allow for the identification of the housefly and dragonfly: • 3. a. wings point out from the side of the body ……….dragonfly • b. wings point to the posterior/end of the body ……….housefly
