Applications • Applications are submitted from, and awarded to, an institution (e.g., Baylor College of Medicine) • Fellow and mentor are identified in the application • Fellow and mentor are identified in BRAIN, with fellow indicated as principal investigator (PI) in BRAIN
Applications • Don’t be disqualified - read and follow the sponsor’s rules regarding format, deadlines, eligibility, and how to apply • Plan • Notify Mentor and find out how much time needed for review • Notify Department and find out how much time to review
Applications • Verify what is needed: • IRB and IACUC protocols • Conflict of Interest Forms • Indirects • Committed Effort • Completed application must be uploaded in BRAIN, approved by mentor, sections, departments and in Sponsored Programs FIVE working days before sponsor deadline

Applications • Professional societies and organizations may offer small travelling fellowships to attend national meetings • Any honor, with or without funding, helps build your curriculum vitae • Some fellowships and many grants are portable, transferring to your new institution if you move
Applications • Submit applications to multiple sponsors – you may not accept duplicate funding, but only approximately 1 in 4 applications will be funded
Awards • Make sure SPO has award notice (forward non-Federal awards to spo@bcm.edu) • SPO reviews assurances, funds in BRAIN and sends to Grants and Contracts Accounting • GCA sets up account in mentors name giving access to funds
