Women in Public Life(title top of page 33) • Before civil war most married women worked at home • By the end of the 19th Century many women had to work outside the house to earn money • 1848 – Seneca Falls Convention, women’s suffrage movement began. • 1896 – NACW (National Association of Colored Women) formed. • 1900, 1 in 5 American women held jobs, 25% in manufacturing. Half were employed in garment trades.

  6. Susan B. Anthony Born on Feb. 15, 1820, in Adams, Mass., Susan B. Anthony was a pioneer crusader for the woman suffrage movement in the United States and president (1892-1900) of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Her work helped pave the way for the Nineteenth Amendment (1920) to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote.

Middle and Upper class women began pushing for reforms such as Suffrage. They also began attending college so that by late 19th Century marriage was not the only option for women.
